FORT WORTH, Texas (February 3, 2019)— Prior to his first trip to compete at the 123^rd edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, bull rider Garrett Wickett favorite rodeo moment happened at the RAM Prairie Circuit Finals.

He had the highest marked ride of his career at the event in Duncan, Oklahoma in 2018 scoring 86 points. That highlight could very well change for the Battle Creek, Nebraska, native. In his very first outing in the Will Rogers Coliseum he scored 84.5 points on Saturday night. He came back at the Sunday matinee and made a second ride for 84 points. Now, he is at the top of the overall leaderboard with 168.5 points on two rides and will be making plans to return here next weekend to ride in the championship finals.

Wickett is a second-generation bull rider who grew up watching his father and uncles compete. He learned what he could from them, then continued his education at Mid Plains Community College in North Platte, Nebraska, where Dustin Elliott, the 2004 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world champion bull rider is the coach.

While Wickett has been pursuing his studies in ag business and welding, he has also been competing in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association where he qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo twice. J.T. Moore from Alvin, Texas, is now in second place overall with 162.5 points on two bulls.

The first round of team roping saw big changes here on Sunday night. Cory Kidd V, from Statesville, North Carolina, and Logan Medlin, from Tatum, New Mexico, are at the top of the leaderboard with a 4.8 second run. Right behind them are brothers Chase and Tyson Thompson from Munday, Texas with a 4.9.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues on Military Monday with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m. All active or retired personnel can get a free rodeo ticket by showing their military ID.

DENVER, Colo. (Jan.21, 2019) — Three years ago, bareback rider Clayton Biglow from Clements, California had yet to compete at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

The talented athlete came close to a win here last year. He finished as the reserve champion in Denver and won over $8,000 giving him a jump start on his 2018 rodeo season. It was his first time to ever compete in the Denver Coliseum. That money helped him qualify for his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He finished fourth for the year and is hoping to improve on that in 2019.

When Biglow started this rodeo, he was 16^th in the world standings with $8,618 won. He has the potential to change that with an 87.5-point ride in the Denver Coliseum on Monday afternoon. That ride on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Major Party puts him in second place in the first round. He will ride his second horse at the Tuesday evening performance and if he gets another great score he will be a favorite to be riding for the National Western Stock Show championship next Sunday.

“I’ve had okay winters in the past, but never a great one,” Biglow said. “It would be a great start to my year to win Denver. It’s one of the old prestigious rodeos that I’ve hoped to win since I started competing.”

Bubba Boots, from St. Anthony, Idaho has made a name for himself in college rodeo having qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo three times in the steer wrestling and team roping. He came through the National Western’s qualifier to compete at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association portion of the rodeo in the steer wrestling.

Boots, who competed for Northwest College at Powell, Wyoming, stopped the clock here in 3.9 seconds. While that is unlikely to be among the top eight competitors who get a check in the first round, it puts him in great shape to qualify for Sunday’s finals if he can have a repeat performance on Tuesday. The best 12 contestants in each of the events with the highest total scores and fastest total times on two runs will advance to the final round hoping to win a National Western title.

The PRCA and WPRA portion of the National Western will continue Tuesdasy night at 7 p.m.

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 12, 2019) — It’s become a tradition to start the National Western Stock Show Rodeo with competition between teams representing rodeos from Colorado and from across the rest of North America.

The history of the event goes back eight years, but in that amount of time, its popularity has grown for both fans and contestants. A near capacity crowd saw competitors in bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding as well as steer wrestling and barrel racing compete for a pair of championship spurs as well as part of the $90,000 purse.

The day started with an 11 a.m. performance featuring all of the contestants on the Cinch Jeans World Team. What started with 10 contestants in each event was quickly narrowed to the best four advancing to Saturday night’s Showdown.

A matinee performance featuring contestants from the Ram Rodeo Colorado Team started at 3:30 p.m. with the same format. Then at 8 p.m. the four contestants that advanced from each team went head-to-head to narrow the field once again in the semifinals. The top score in each event from the two teams advanced again to a winner-take-all final round.

To be part of the World team, contestants were invited to represent rodeos in North Platte, Nebraska.; Guymon, Oklahoma; Rapid City, South Dakota; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Austin, Texas; Fort Worth, Texas; Calgary, Alberta; Dodge City, Kansas; San Angelo, Texas; and Houston, Texas.

For the Colorado team, three contestants represented the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in each event. Additionally, the following rodeos participated: Loveland; Pueblo, Greeley; Estes Park; Elizabeth; and Colorado Springs. To complete the 10-person roster, a contestant was invited as a wildcard.

There was only one contestant from the Colorado Team that won a championship, and even though his home is in Nanton, Alberta, the cheers from the stands were the loudest when they announced Clay Elliott as the saddle bronc riding champion.

Elliott watched as Ryder Wright rode Vold Rodeo’s Sun Glow for 90 points and knew if he wanted to win, he had his work cut out for him. It was a six-year-old horse named Amazon Hills from Calgary Stampede that Elliott chose to ride. They both did their jobs and when it was all said and done, Elliott also had 90-points beside his name. Because he had the high score in the semifinals, Elliott earned the spurs and the $8,000 check that went to the champion.

Barrel racing couldn’t have been any more exciting or any closer. It was a match-up between Amy Jo Reisdorfer from Cheyenne, Wyoming who was representing her home-town rodeo for the world team and Ari-Anna Flynn who was representing the Roof Top Rodeo at Estes Park for the Colorado Team.

Reisdorfer won the World performance with a time of 15.543 seconds. That was worth $1,000. She earned another $1,000 for her finish in the semifinals where she stopped the clock in 15.553 seconds. She was the first of the two barrel racers to run in the finals and had her fastest run of the day at 15.539.

Flynn also had the fastest of her three runs in the final round stopping the clock in 15.540 seconds. Reisdorfer won the title and the $8,000 by just one thousandth of a second on a horse that they call Blue Duck.

“When I got up this morning, I just wanted to come in here and have consistent, smooth runs,” she said. “My oldest son was coaching me after my second run. I have three boys here with me and they all love Blue Duck. They all rodeo and are part of the team that it takes. I think he runs better when they are here.”

Reisdorfer and her husband have six children between them, and between all of them, Blue Duck gets plenty of treats and attention. After winning the championship here on Saturday, they were planning some extra pampering for the black gelding.

Clayton Sellars made a big statement when he won the bull riding for the World Team. He was the most successful of the 20 competitors by far as the only one to have two qualified rides. He advanced to the semifinals based on the time that he rode during the morning performance, then got an 83-point score Saturday night.

Coy Pollmeier from the Colorado Team also rode in the semifinals scoring 81 points. Sellars got first pick of the bulls in the finals because of his high score. He chose HTTR, a bull owned by 4L and Diamond S Rodeo.

That choice proved fruitful with an 87.5-point ride. Sellars was the only man to ride two bulls in the Denver Coliseum on Saturday.

“I’ve been riding good and have been confident,” Sellars said. He was crowned the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rookie of the Year in the bull riding for the 2018 season. “I’ve been fired up and couldn’t wait to get on here. Now, I’m excited to get back here for the rodeo.” Sellars will compete again at the PRCA rodeo next Saturday.

Other winners were World Team members, Seth Hardwick in the bareback riding and Josh Garner in the steer wrestling.

The 113^th National Western Stock show will see a cross-cultural event in the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza in the Denver Coliseum on Sunday. Performances are at 2 and 6:30 p.m.

CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 18, 2018) – Fans would be hard pressed to find any better action than they saw at the Caldwell Night Rodeo during Championship Night on Saturday. Just ask anyone of the 8,000 that were in attendance.

In anticipation of the championships, Saturday night’s tickets were all sold in advance and were gone early the afternoon of the final performance. The rivalry between the Rowdys in the east stands and the Civies in the west stands was going strong all night and rodeo contestants fed off the energy of the fans.

One of those contestants, bareback rider Connor Hamilton, made the trip here from Calgary, Alberta, and while he has competed at big rodeos in his home country, nothing was quite like Caldwell for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rookie. Hamilton rode at the first performance last Tuesday. His 85.5-point ride on Outlaw Bucker’s Awkward Todd was the high-marked ride of the night and as such got Hamilton a trip around the arena on a saddle horse for a victory lap.

Then he won the rodeo after riding Powder River Rodeo’s award-winning horse Craig at Midnight for 88 points. He had just watched world champion Kaycee Field score 88 on another horse from the Wyoming stock contractors, Bobcat. He was also up against the reigning world champion Tim O’Connell who finished third with an 85.5.

When it was all said and done, Hamilton won the championship with the highest total score on two rides at 173.5 points. Hamilton is currently third in the bareback riding rookie of the year standings with $11,892 in season earnings. He added to that significantly with the $7,405 that he won here.

The saddle bronc riding record was nearly in jeopardy Saturday night. Shaun Stroh set the arena record here in 2010 with 91 points. Two men came close to matching it and again it was horses from Powder River Rodeo that got these cowboys 90-point rides.

Hardy Braden from Welch, Okla., was first to go. He rode Miss Chestnut and took the overall lead. He had to wait thru several more competitors to see if it would hold. One of those competitors was the reigning world champion Ryder Wright from Milford, Utah.

Wright got on Double Take and with another outstanding effort got a 90. They had also tied in the first round and ended up splitting the win here with 176 points. That earned each of them $5,576.

The big winner here was steer wrestler Tyler Waguespack from Gonzales, La., who downed three steers in 12.8 seconds. He won $8,447. Trevor Brazile won his fourth tie-down roping title here and added $5,544 to his earnings. Brazile who holds the arena record at 7.3 seconds had a total time of 27.3 on three runs for the championship.

Barrel racer Stevi Hillman was the only repeat winner from 2017. Hillman rode MCM ImASharpGuy to the title last year. This year she was on Cuatro Fame a horse that she calls “Truck” for the win. They had three runs that added up to 51.32 seconds earning $7628.

           CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 28, 2018 — Once again, the best was saved for last in the barrel racing at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

Sunshine did more than brighten up the skies at Frontier Park; it also dried the ground While arena conditions weren’t ideal, they had improved from Friday and it showed in Saturday’s barrel racing times.

The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association field included many that had been the most successful in the first round, including reigning world champion Nellie Miller from Cottonwood, California. Riding her great horse, Rafter W Minnie Reba, that she calls “Sister,” Miller stopped the clock in 17.76 seconds. She was the final barrel racer in the regular competition before Championship Sunday.

Combined with her first-round time of 17.54, she leads the overall standings with a total of 35.30 seconds. Miller had a big smile on her face and was giving Sister some love as she rode out of the arena.

They won the first round and tied for fifth in the second round. She has already won nearly $10,000 here and stands to add to it significantly on Sunday. Miller is currently second in the world standings. A big win here could help her narrow the gap.

Bill Tutor made a big move in Saturday’s bareback riding. Wyoming’s own Seth Hardwick was at the top of the leaderboard at 166.5 points on two rides. Tutor changed that with an 85-point effort on J Bar J Rodeo’s Smack Daddy Saturday. That gave him a total of 167.5 to move him into first place.

Steer wrestler Levi Rudd, from Chelsea, Oklahoma is the big money winner of more than 1,200 contestants that have competed at the 122^nd edition of the rodeo. Rudd placed second in the first round after stopping the clock in 6.1 seconds on Friday. He came back on Saturday with another second-place finish at 8.0. Those two checks added up to $11,006 in earnings and he has an opportunity to add a lot more to that on Championship Sunday.

Rudd now has command of the overall lead and is on pace to have the biggest win of his career. He has a total time of 14.1 seconds and is over two seconds faster than the man in second place, Curtis Cassidy from Donalda, Alberta.

Friday and Saturday also saw the most successful group of bull riders. Trevor Kastner, from Roff, Oklahoma; Gray Essary III, of Sommerville, Tennessee; Edgar, Montana’s Parker Breding; and Ruger Piva, from Challis, Idaho all rode two bulls. That increased the total to seven riders that had a score on both of their bulls. The remainder of the 16-man field is made up of the highest scoring riders on one ride.

All the other events will feature the top 12 riders with the highest total score or fastest total time from two competitions. Action for Championship Sunday gets underway at 12:45 p.m. Along with the prestigious buckle, champions will also receive trophy saddles and other awards.

            CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 25, 2018 — It’s only fitting that two local participants in the rodeo had success on Cheyenne/Laramie County Day on Wednesday at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

A very enthusiastic crowd cheered for one of the favorites, Brody Cress, in the saddle bronc riding. The Hillsdale resident won the competition here last year. He graduated from Cheyenne Central High School where he was a wrestling stand out.

Cress got on a horse owned by Stace Smith Pro Rodeo named Utopia and when the judges added up their scores, he had an 88 by his name. That is the highest score at the 122^nd edition of the rodeo so far. He then packed up his gear and was making a mad dash out of Frontier Park. He was headed to Eagle, Colorado to ride Wednesday night, then back to Cheyenne for his second round of competition on Thursday.

In the steer wrestling, it was Aaron Vosler, that had the stars align in his favor. Vosler stopped the clock in 5.7 seconds which is the fastest run of the rodeo so far. The steer wrestling is one of the most exciting events at Cheyenne. Steers get a 30-foot head start and when cowboys get to them, they are all running full on.

Anything can happen and often does. Getting that steer slowed down, and then laying it on the ground takes skill, strength and patience. A 5.7-second run wouldn’t place at most rodeos, but it is just six-tenths off of the arena record in Frontier Park.

Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi is hoping for her second buckle from Cheyenne. She won the rodeo here in 2007 aboard her great gelding Stitch, then went on to win her first of two world titles. This year Pozzi-Tonozzi is riding an American Quarter Horse mare, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that she calls Mona.

They had a nearly flawless run in the big arena here stopping the clock in 17.61 seconds. She won almost $2,000 here in the first round with a time of 17.83. She now has command of the overall standings here with a total time of 35.44 seconds. Lacinda Rose from Willard, Missouri, is in second at 36.77.

All of the competition at the sixth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo will be in the second round. Competition gets underway at 12:45 p.m. There will be a lot of pink seen around the arena as well as inside of it as “Give Cancer the Boot” is the day’s theme.

Wild Horse Race: No qualifiers

 

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 9, 2018) –  Trevor Kastner has been setting earnings records in the bull riding at the 2018 San Antonio Rodeo.

The Roff, Oklahoma, resident was the only rider to last eight seconds at the first performance and while his 78-point score wasn’t anything to brag about, his $5,945 paycheck was. He came back to the AT&T Center on Friday night for the second round of Bracket 1 and again was the only rider to get a score. This time it was 91-points on Four Star Rodeo’s Yellow Fever that got him the big check. After two rounds, he has total earnings of $11,891. That money will see him advancing to the semi-finals and a favorite to go on to the championship round.

Kastner and all the other 80 contestants (10 in each event) in Bracket 1 will see the completion of their preliminary competition here at the Saturday matinee performance beginning at 1 p.m. It can’t come to fast for Kastner as his wife is expecting their first child any day.

“I keep thinking I’m going to get the phone call and have to leave San Antonio,” Kastner said. “It looks like it’s going to work out. I’ll go home as soon as I get done and have time with them before I come back for the Semifinals.”

The new addition to their family isn’t his only motivations to earn money in the rodeo arena. Kastner qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) three consecutive years from 2011 – 2013. Then, injuries and just not riding to his potential saw him miss the next four. He won the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo a week ago and is leading the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings. The money from San Antonio won’t be added to those standings until the rodeo’s conclusion on February 24^th, and with what he could still win here, he could increase his lead substantially.

“The money is the most important thing now,” Kastner said. “I have a family to support and I want to get back to the NFR.”

When he comes back here for the Semifinals, he will be a new daddy to a baby girl named McKenna Mae. Kastner will have a lot of reasons to celebrate and extra motivation to keep winning.

Hailey Kinsel and her trusty steed DM Sissy Hayday had their second win in the AT&T Center on Friday night. They stopped the clock in 13.90 seconds to win $2,378. The Texas A&M graduate has earned $4,756 so far and still has one more run to make in Bracket 1. They have already earned enough money to advance to the Semifinals but every dollar counts towards a championship here so she and Sister will be running hard again on Saturday.

Kinsel lives less than 100 miles away from San Antonio in Cotulla. This is the first time that she has qualified to compete in the highest-paying rodeo of the regular season. She and Sister set an arena record last December at the NFR and finished the season in second place. The way the horse and rider have been working together, a new arena record in the AT&T Center is not out of the question.

FORT WORTH, Texas (February 3, 2018) — The lion’s share of nearly $650,000 in prize money was paid out at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Saturday.

The day got off to a rousing start on Saturday afternoon with the last performance of regular competition. That set the field for Saturday night’s finals and paid checks in the preliminary rounds.

Saturday night kicked off with the 12 best bareback riders trying to add their names to the history books. The most successful out of the 74 entries was Wyoming’s J.R. Vezain. The former college champion and five-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier got on an extra horse to earn the title.

Initially, he got on Universal Pro Rodeo’s horse named Short Fuse. When the horse stumbled, that gave Vezain another opportunity. He quickly made the decision to give up his 82-point score and try again. That was a wise decision as he improved by over five points. He rode Picket Pro Rodeo’s Top Notch for 87.5 points to win the finals. He also had the highest total through four rounds of competition at 338.5 to earn a total of $10,817.

Tyler Pearson could be the happiest rodeo contestant of the 1,147 that were entered here. Pearson, from Louisville, Mississippi won the steer wrestling world championship last December at the NFR and hasn’t slowed down one bit.

He won the championship at the National Western Stock Show in Denver for more than $16,000 just two weeks ago. He came here and added to that significantly. He stopped the clock in 3.9 seconds to win the final round. That gave him a total of 12.4 on three runs and the championship. Pearson left Fort Worth with $14,729 and is hoping for a trifecta when he competes at the San Antonio Stock Show which begins next week.

Tyler was riding Scooter, a horse he and fellow steer wrestler Kyle Irwin own in partnership. Scooter, whose registered name is Canted Plan, was the 2017 AQHA/PRCA steer wrestling horse of the year. This was the second big win at Fort Worth for the 13-year-old gelding. He took Luke Branquinho to the championship here one year ago.

Another contestant that is having a great season and hoping his momentum continues is Shane Hanchey, from Sulphur, La., Hanchey, like Pearson, earned the title at the National Western. He also won the championship here with a total of 27.3 seconds on three runs. Hanchey had the fastest time of the Championship Finals at 7.8. He earned $18,670 and won the most money of all the contestants in Fort Worth.

This is the second championship in the Will Rogers Coliseum for the 2013 world champion tie-down roper. He also earned his second championship at Denver this year. Hanchey has been riding his great horse “Bam Bam” and they have been working together flawlessly.

“I’ve gotten on a roll like this before, but never this early in the season,” Hanchey said. “I’m more excited than ever to compete at San Antonio. Winning at Fort Worth for a second time was really special. Then getting that $5,000 bonus was an awesome surprise.”

All the event champions got that extra surprise when they got their awards. It was the second win here for bull rider Trevor Kastner and team roping header Matt Sherwood, but the first time they received the bonus. Kastner won the title here in 2010. This year, he earned $12,504 after scoring 87 points on J Bar J Rodeo’s Little Big Man. That gave him a three-head total of 251.5 for the championship.

Sherwood, from Pima, Arizona did the heading for veteran heeler Walt Woodard, from Stephenville, Texas. They stopped the clock in the finals in 5.5 seconds and had the best total on three at 15.5 seconds. They each got $13,016.

Jacobs Crawley has won nearly every major rodeo on the circuit after getting his win here. The Boerne, Texas, resident won the world championship in 2015 and has made the trip to Las Vegas to compete at the NFR seven times. With the $13,016 that he won here, he has a good start on an eighth qualification.

The barrel racing was all about a brown mare named CP Dark Moon, known to her fans as Paige. Paige is owned and ridden by Amberleigh Moore of Keizer, Oregon. They made the trip to Las Vegas the first time in 2016. Then made it back again last year.

Moore trained Paige and the duo has a very special relationship. They won the first round here and were solid in the second. They had the fastest total time on three runs at 49.32 seconds to win $15,100.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo is making plans for the 2019 event and beyond. Next year’s rodeo will be the last one held in the historic Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum before the legendary event moves into the new Dickies Arena.

FORT WORTH, Texas (January 30, 2018) — One year ago, Amberleigh Moore and her mare CP Dark Moon that she calls Paige saw the highs and lows of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.

It was the first time they had ever competed in Will Rogers Coliseum and after a very successful Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) they were hopeful that their momentum would continue. They stopped the clock in 16.62 seconds and won third in the first round.

That earned them a second opportunity and then disaster struck. Coming away from the third barrel, Moore’s cinch broke. As they were exiting the arena, she came off and hit the gate. Despite the mishap, she finished in ninth place overall in 2017.

Putting all of that behind her and checking her cinches twice, she and Paige ran again here last Saturday in the 14^th performance. They stopped the clock in 16.35 seconds That was the fastest time of the rodeo so far and earned them a $5,175 check for the top spot in the first round. The remaining seven performances before Saturday night’s Championship Finals will see the 70 barrel racers with the fastest times in a second round of competition. The 12 with the fastest overall times compete in the finals.

Two world champions, partnered in the team roping, have taken the overall lead here. Matt Sherwood, from Pima, Arizona, and Walt Woodard, from Stephenville, Texas, stopped the clock in 5.0 seconds at the Tuesday matinee to give them a total time of 10.1 seconds.

They now have an edge of one-tenth of a second over the team in second place, Luke Brown from Rock Hill, South Carolina and Jake Long from Coffeyville, Kansas. At Tuesday night’s performance, teams had their first round of competition. Three teams had runs under six seconds and have the potential to move into the overall standings. Among those are Shane Philip from Washington, Texas, and Joel Bach from Mount Vernon, Texas. Bach won this rodeo in 2010 roping with Paul Eaves.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues its 100^th-anniversary edition Wednesday with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m., in the historic Will Rogers Coliseum.

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 6, 2017) — Opening day of the National Western Stock Show has featured three action-packed rodeo performances that have had fans on the edge of their seats for the last seven years.

Known as Super Saturday, the first performance features contestants representing rodeos across the country for the Cinch Jeans World Team. Beginning at 11 a.m., 10 bareback riders, steer wrestlers, saddle bronc riders, barrel racers and bull riders competed to represent the “World” in the semifinals.

The second performance kicked off at 3:30 with the same events, but these contestants were part of CenturyLink’s Colorado Team. The top four in each event for each team advanced to the semifinals which started at 8 p.m.

The tournament format narrowed the field from 10 to four, then one from each team. The best world contestant competed against the best from the Colorado team, going head-to-head for an $8,000 winner-take-all purse in each event.

To be part of the World team, contestants were invited to represent rodeos in North Platte, Nebraska.; Guymon, Oklahoma; Rapid City, South Dakota; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Austin, Texas; Fort Worth, Texas; Calgary, Alberta; Dodge City, Kansas; San Angelo, Texas; and Houston, Texas.

For the Colorado team, three contestants represented the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in each event. Additionally, the following rodeos participated: Loveland; Pueblo, Greeley; Estes Park; Elizabeth; and Colorado Springs. To complete the 10-person roster, a contestant was invited as a wildcard.

In the final round of bareback riding it was rising star Mason Clements that got the championship. Clements had an 87.5-point ride to take the first event for the world team.

The steer wrestling got exciting as Timmy Sparing, of the world team, stopped the clock in under four seconds to take the lead, then officials signaled that he got a 10-second penalty for not giving the steer a head start. The ball was in Dru Melvin’s court who was the top gunner for the Colorado team.

Getting a handle on the steer proved to be a challenge for Melvin who was underneath the four-footed bovine at one point. However, Melvin prevailed and got the 600-pound animal layed down just in time to beat Sparing and win for Colorado.

Cody DeMoss is a familiar name at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo having won the saddle bronc riding championship in Denver on multiple occasions. He added another notch to his rodeo belt with a win here on Saturday night for the world team beating Colorado team’s CoBurn Bradshaw.

Carly Richardson had a mere tenth-of-a-second edge to win the barrel racing title for the world team over Colorado team’s Sydni Blanchard. Richardson stopped the clock in 15.745 seconds aboard her 11-year-old gelding named Money. Richardson will be back here to compete in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel race during the rodeo on January 19^th and 20^th.

“I’m pretty excited about this,” Richardson said. “Today was good practice for us. After making three runs in one day, I think we will all sleep good tonight.”

Colorado got the final win of the night when Riker Carter won the bull riding with an outstanding 88-point effort representing the National Western Stock Show. Carter rode all three of his bulls and added $9,700 to his checking account. Reid Barker represented the world team in the bull riding but an early buck off saw him leave the arena with no score.

The 111^th National Western Stock show will see a cross-cultural event in the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza in the Denver Coliseum on Sunday. Performances are at 2 and 6:30 p.m.
