  • Colorado Native represents Texas College at College National Finals Rodeo well

Colorado Native represents Texas College at College National Finals Rodeo well

CASPER, Wyo. (June 16, 2015) –  After three years of competing in the breakaway roping for Western Texas College (Snyder), Tamara Tunink from Fowler, Colo., finally qualified for her first College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR).

She came into the Casper Events Center with renewed confidence after being reserve champion in the Southwest Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. That confidence has served her well as she took the early lead in her signature event with a total time of 9.1 seconds on three head. Her fastest of three runs here was in the first round last Sunday where she stopped the clock in 2.6 seconds. That tied her for eighth place.

She came back during slack competition with a 3.1. Then on Tuesday night, she had a 3.4. Last year, a total time of 9.1 qualified for the finals here in fourth place, so Tunink is looking good for a championship round qualification this year.

“She is the kind of student athlete that you want,” her coach Greg Rhodes said. “She works as hard in the classroom as she does in the arena. She’s on-time, dedicated and willing to do anything. She throws a perfect loop and I’m pleased to see her confident and doing well here.”

Tunink is majoring in ag business and plans to transfer to Texas Tech University next fall to complete her education. She has one year of eligibility left and will be hoping for a second CNFR qualification next year.

Clark Adcock from the University of Tennessee – Martin is having a great CNFR. Adcock who just received his Bachelor’s degree is leading the overall standings in the tie-down roping with a total time of 33.6 seconds. He was also successful in two rounds of team roping. He has his third team roping run on Friday and is in great shape to make the finals in two events. Adcock also leads the men’s all-around standings with 175 points so far.

Competition continues here on Wednesday with the second performance beginning at 7 p.m.

  • College rodeo athletes racking up points at College National Finals Rodeo

College rodeo athletes racking up points at College National Finals Rodeo

CASPER, Wyo. (June 14, 2015) – Some cowboys and cowgirls at the College National Finals Rodeo made their team members very happy during the Bulls Broncs and Breakaway competition that kicked off the College National Finals Rodeo on Sunday afternoon.

The first rounds of bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding along with the breakaway roping were all completed in the Casper Events Center and not only did the successful contestants put themselves in a good position to win national titles, they also garnered very important points towards team titles. The top eight contestants in the individual rounds earn points according to their placing here. Every contestant in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and breakaway roping that placed in the first round is also part of their college or university’s team. Prior to the CNFR, coaches have to designate who is on their team so strategy to create a winning team is important. Men’s teams consist of six competitors and women’s teams have four.

Winning first place in the bareback riding with an 82 point score and gaining 80 points for Missouri Valley College was Tim O’Connell, from Zwingle, Iowa. O’Connell is a four-time CNFR qualifier who has had success here in the past but fell short of a national championship. He just graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in public relations and has made getting his education a priority. Last December he had to take his final exams early so he could travel to Las Vegas to compete at his first National Finals Rodeo.

The next generation of saddle bronc riding Wrights also had success when Rusty Wright, son of world champion and former college champion Cody Wright had a 75.5-point score. That was good enough for first place and also earned 80 points for the College of Southern Idaho.

There was a tie in the breakaway roping when University of Montana – Western’s Tess Turk and McNeese State Univeristy’s Cooper McKenzie each had times of 2.1 seconds. They earned their respective schools 75 points each.

There were five successful bull riders on Sunday afternoon. Trasen Jones from the College of Southern Idaho finished at the top of the leaderboard with a 77.5. Jones added another 80 points to the College of Southern Idaho’s team total.

Competition continues here on Monday morning at 7 a.m. where bareback riders, saddle bronc riders, bull riders and breakaway ropers will start the second round. Steer wrestlers, tie-down ropers, team ropers, barrel racers and goat tiers will all have their first round.

  • Bownds rebounds at San Antonio Rodeo

Bownds rebounds at San Antonio Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 13, 2015) — It was a very happy Chandler Bownds that made the victory lap in front of fans at the second performance of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo.

The bull rider from Lubbock, Texas, is no stranger to the winner’s circle having qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rookie of the Year in 2011 and again in 2013. Bownds missed rodeo’s championship in 2014 finishing 20th in the standings, high enough to qualify him for San Antonio’s $1.65 million rodeo.

Last year was also filled with chronic pain from injuries. He is now healthy and while the year hasn’t started off like he had hoped it could all change here. Bownds won the second round of the first bracket with an outstanding 89-point ride on Rafter H Rodeo’s bull, Never Been Kissed, a bull that bucks off 90% of his riders. That was good for $2,281 for put him in good position to be back here for the semi-finals.

At most rodeos, bucking off in the first round – like Bownds did on Thursday night – would minimize their chances of advancing. Here contestants move into the semi-finals based on the total amount of money they win in their bracket. Each bracket contains 10 competitors and the top four money earners will move forward.

Bownds bucked off on Thursday night but his win here Friday night ,puts him in a tie with Dallee Mason from Weiser, Idaho, on the money list. They will both ride again at the Saturday matinee performance and hope to add to their earnings.

“I like the way this rodeo is set up,” Bownds said. “When your success is based on money, even when you buck off you still have a chance. It’s always been a rodeo that I look forward to coming to.”

Friday night’s bull riding had three Texans scoring over 80 points including Bownds’ 89. Howdy Cloud from Kountze, was 86 and Nile Lebaron from Weatherford scored 85. The fourth man to make to the whistle was Tanner Learmont from Cleburne, Texas who had a 79.

Victoria Williams from Kiln, Miss., has dominated the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing so far. She won the first round with a time of 13.95 seconds. She bettered that significantly on Friday night taking her horse around the cloverleaf pattern in 13.74. They are now the high money earners at the rodeo so far with a total of $4,562 and are assured a spot in the semi-finals.

The first bracket of competition will come to a close at the Saturday matinee performance beginning at 1 p.m. The second bracket then starts Saturday evening at 7:30.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb.13, 2015) — The following are results from the first performance of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo which features over $1.65 million in cash and prizes.

  • Elliott and Lanham move to top of bull riding leaderboard at Denver Rodeo

Elliott and Lanham move to top of bull riding leaderboard at Denver Rodeo

DENVER (Jan. 21, 2015) — Idaho and Utah were well represented at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Tuesday and Wednesday and now stand atop the leaderboard in the bull riding.

Tag Elliott from Thatcher, Utah, and Zeb Lanham from Sweet, Idaho are tied for first place in the overall standings with 161 points on two rides.

Elliot is a former college champion and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier. He scored 81 points here on Tuesday night, then came back to the Monday matinee performance and had the second highest score of the rodeo at 80.

Lanham’s success came during the Wednesday matinee performance when he scored 85 points on Summit Pro Rodeo’s bull names Blue Denim. That also put the two-time NFR qualifier in a tie for first place in the second round of competition with Dustin Bowen, from Waller, Texas.

There are now seven bull riders who have been successful in both rounds so it looks like the top 12 that advance to the U.S. Bank Championship Finals on Sunday will all have two scores. Three more have that opportunity after Wednesday night’s rodeo including the 2011world champion Shane Proctor from Grand Coulee, Wash.

Proctor had the high-marked ride of the night when he scored 84 points on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Red Mud. That score puts him in third place in the first round and gives him the opportunity to overtake the lead held by Lanham and Elliott. Proctor will ride his second bull here at the Thursday morning performance.

Team ropers Jake Cooper from Monument, N.M., and Tyler McKnight, from Wells, Texas, continued their bid for a National Western championship on Wednesday. They stopped the clock in 5.8 seconds Wednesday afternoon. That gave them a total time of 11.1 seconds where they are just one-tenth of a second behind the team in first place in the overall standings.

There are two rodeo performances in the Denver Coliseum on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.

  • Team ropers in position to cash in at National Western

Team ropers in position to cash in at National Western

DENVER (Jan. 20, 2015) — Jake Cooper and Tyler McKnight had a good night at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Tuesday.

With Cooper heading and McKnight heeling, they stopped the clock in 5.3 seconds to move into a three-way tie for the lead in the first round of team roping. Cooper, from Monument, N.M., and McKnight from Wells, Texas, are tied with Texans Caleb Bennett and Mickey Gomez as well as Utah’s Rhen Richard and Kory Koontz also from Texas.

Cooper and McKnight started roping together last spring after the big building rodeos had come to a close.  They are hoping to cash in early this season at rodeos like Denver and qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). They finished in the top 30 last year so the talent is definitely there.

“I think we have a good style together,” Cooper said of their roping. “I turn him (McKnight) a lot of steers and he likes to throw really fast.”

Hopefully that will work for them again at the Wednesday matinee performance when they rope their second steer. With a solid run, they will be back here Sunday for the U.S. Bank Championship Finals where the lion’s share of prize money will be paid.

World champion barrel racer Fallon Taylor from Whitesboro, Texas, also has a chance to advance to Sunday’s finals. She took her great mare Baby Flo around the cloverleaf pattern in 15.43 seconds. That is currently fifth in the first round. She will be one of the first barrel racers to compete here Wednesday and will be looking for an even faster time.

So far, through eight performances there are only four riders that have ridden two bulls. After Tuesday night’s rodeo, five more have that opportunity including former college champion and NFR qualifier Tag Elliott from Thatcher, Utah. He rode Cervi Championship’s Gunsmoke for 81 points which is also currently fifth in the first round.

There are two rodeo performances in the Denver Coliseum on Wednesday at 1:30 and 7 p.m.

  • Davis cashes in at PBR Denver Chute-Out at National Western Stock Show

Davis cashes in at PBR Denver Chute-Out at National Western Stock Show

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 14, 2015) — Cooper Davis had a lot to smile about at the National Western Stock Show on Wednesday night, $22,125 reasons actually.

Davis won the Professional Bull Riders’ Denver Chute-Out after riding three bulls for a total score of 253.5 points. The Jasper, Texas, cowboy was one of 90 riders to compete at the Touring Pro Division Finals in the Denver Coliseum. He had his first bull on Monday night, and was among nine riders who lasted eight-seconds. That advanced him to Wednesday night’s semi-finals where he rode a bull named Little Tex owned by Diamond S from Weatherford, Texas. He scored 85 points on that bull for a third place finish.

That ride also qualified him for the finals where he entered in fifth place. Davis scored 89 points on Monty Samford’s Dr. Lector and it was all over but the waiting. There were four riders left that included the reigning world champion, Brazilian Silvano Alves. Alves was the only one of the four to make it to the whistle, but his 86-point effort put him in second place, just 2.5 points behind Davis.

“It’s awesome to ride in front of a crowd like this,” Davis said. “This is a real confidence builder for my 2015 season. Riding against guys like Silvano and winning tells my I’m on the right track.”

Davis, was the 2013 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rookie of the Year and he qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo that same year. This year his focus will be on the PBR where he can have more time at home as he is about to become a daddy.

Total payoff for this year’s Denver Chute-Out was $53,223. A near capacity crowd was on hand to watch all of the action. The bulls once again dominated the cowboys as there were 12 out of 45 possible rides.

Thursday night the National Western Stock Show will host the Cinch Super Shootout Rodeo which pits contestants from top rodeos against each other in a tournament style format.

  • Super Saturday at National Western Stock Show filled with rodeo action

Super Saturday at National Western Stock Show filled with rodeo action

DENVER, Colo. — It was a duel between traveling partners that highlighted the fourth annual National Western Stock Show Rodeo Super Saturday.

Action started at the morning performance with contestants representing rodeos across North America in the World performance. A different group competed in the matinee rodeo for rodeos in Colorado including the National Western.

The best four from each of those rodeos advanced to the Showdown round on Saturday night and in tournament style winner-take-all action, the best World contestant and best Colorado contestant duked it out for a $10,000 check.

In the bareback riding, R.C. Landingham, from Pendelton, Ore., won the World performance with an 87 point ride representing the “Daddy of ‘em All” at Cheyenne, Wyo., to be a favorite in the Showdown. The top winner out of the Colorado performance was Nick Gutzwiler from Cheney, Wash., who represented Colorado Springs. Landingham was a spectator at that performance cheering on his traveling partner Clint Laye from Ponoka, Alberta who rode for the Larimer County Fair Rodeo in Loveland.

Laye placed third to be among the top four that advanced to the Showdown. That resulted in one of the most dramatic endings of the evening. Laye was 82 points, one point ahead of Landingham. So, Laye got to choose which bucking horse he would ride first and he picked a horse he was very familiar with, Calgary Stampede’s Unfortunate Carma.

“I think he can be 90 points on that horse,” Landingham commented at the time, and he didn’t miss the mark by much. Laye finished the night with an 89-point ride to win an $8,000 check. The duo had trouble getting here when their van broke down so regardless who won, the money has already been spent on auto repairs.

Laye and Landingham are a group of bareback riders that call themselves the “flow riders.” They have let their hair grow out in support of Landingham’s mother who has cancer and are eventually going to donate it to Locks of Love.

The steer wrestling championship was won by the narrowest of margins. Casey Martin from Sulphur, La., was the first to go. He was a Wild Card invitee for the Colorado group and stopped the clock in 4.02 seconds. Then Clayton Hass from Ennis, Texas, knew he needed to step it up. • Rodeo’s rising stars will compete in Las Vegas

Rodeo’s rising stars will compete in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Dec. 3, 2014— Before competition starts at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on Thursday night at the Thomas and Mack Center, rising stars of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) will be competing in Las Vegas.

Becoming a member of the PRCA starts when rodeo contestants buy their permits. They then have to fill that permit by earning money competing at sanctioned rodeos before they can become a full-fledged member. The top permit holders based on money won will be competing at the 2014 PRCA Permit Holder of the Year Challenge at the South Point Equestrian Center beginning at 12 p.m. on Dec. 4, just a few hours before the first performance of the WNFR.

This is the sixth year for the Permit Holder Challenge but the first year that timed-events have been included. The competition is being held in conjunction with Benny Binion’s World Famous Bucking Horse and Bull Sale. Five contestants in each of the standard events, bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and bull riding will each compete in two rounds. Winners will be determined by the highest total score and fastest total time.

The bareback, saddle bronc and bull riders will be getting on animals that are part of the sale. That has proved to be a beneficial combination for former permit holders that won here. Last year, Sage Kimzey from Strong City, Okla., won the bull riding at the Permit Holder Challenge. This year he enters the WNFR in first place, is the Resistol Rookie of the Year and is on pace to win his first world championship.

“Competing in Las Vegas last year really lit a fire in me to be back at the WNFR this year,” Kimzey said. “I’ve dreamt and worked for this my whole life and last year was definitely a stepping stone.”

Highlighting this year’s competition is CoBurn Bradshaw from Beaver, Utah in the saddle bronc riding. Bradshaw won the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s championship at the College National Finals Rodeo last June in Casper, Wyo. He is the highest money earner of all of the permit holders with over $30,000 in earnings.

Bradshaw is married and his wife just happens to be the sister of the four Wright brothers that are competing at this year’s WNFR. Cody Wright’s oldest son Rusty is also on the contestant roster in saddle bronc riding.

Another contestant with strong WNFR ties is team roper Shawn Bird from Cut Bank, Mont. Bird will rope in the Permit Challenge with Levi Lord from Sturgis, S.D., hoping to win a title. Then he will head over to the Thomas and Mack Center to watch his older brother Dustin Bird compete in the team roping.

Along with $21,000 in cash, a variety of prizes will be won by the 2014 Permit Holer of the Year Challenge contestants. It has been made possible with support from the following sponsors: RAM Rodeo; San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo; Davie Pro Rodeo; Tucson Rodeo; Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo; Association of Rodeo Committees; Brighton Field Day Festival and Rodeo; National Western Stock Show; Barstow Rodeo; Wrangler; Resistol; South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa; Cactus Ropes and the Justin Sportsmedicine Team.

  • Washington State Fair Rodeo closes with big wins

Washington State Fair Rodeo closes with big wins

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Sept.7, 2014—Some cowboys are breathing a little easier and thinking their goal of qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is closer thanks to big wins at the Justin Boots Playoffs at the Washington State Fair.

Forty-eight contestants competed here in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, bull riding and the women’s barrel race on Sept. 5-6 hoping to advance to the Championship Finals on Sunday afternoon. For some of those that advanced winning here was crucial.

“This really took the pressure off for me,” said Kyle Irwin who won the steer wrestling championship. “I still need to win some more money and I’m not going to let up, but I’m in a much better position now than I was before Puyallup.”

Irwin won the first round of competition and came into the finals at the top of the leaderboard with a 3.7-second run. Being the most consistent and fastest steer wrestler here, he stopped the clock in 3.7 seconds again to win the final round and the overall title with a total time of 7.4. His earnings here totaled $8,806 moving him from 15th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) world standings to 13th.

With Irwin’s move up in the standings, he is in position to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). A member of the PRCA since 2011, the 6”1’ athlete already has one national title to his credit this year. He set an arena record of 3.3 seconds enroute to the championship at the Ram National Circuit Finals held in Oklahoma last April.

Cody DeMoss is a veteran saddle bronc rider with nine NFR qualifications on his rodeo resume. While he didn’t win the rodeo here, he moved from 15th to 10th place in the standings with a third place finish here and at Dayton, Iowa this weekend. Tyrell Smith, from Cascade, Mont., earned the event’s championship with 168.5 points on two rides. He earned $5,514.

The big winner here was the reigning world champion bareback rider Kaycee Feild from Spanish Fork, Utah. Feild won the first round, placed second in the finals and earned the title with a total score of 171 points on two rides. It earned him $10,639 and increased his lead in the world standings. He has a $38,000 lead over the man in second place, Steven Peebles from Redmond, Ore., who had the high score on Sunday at 86.

This year’s rodeo had total prize money of $279,445. It is traditionally the kick-off event of the Washington State Fair which continues through Sept. 21. For more information and complete fair schedules go to www.thefair.com.
