CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 19, 2023)—A barrel racer from Lampasas, Texas earned more money than any other contestant at the Caldwell Night Rodeo, and it was her second championship here. She also won in 2006.

Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi won the first round, was second in the second and the final round and earned the title in the D & B Arena with a time of 50.50 seconds on three runs. When her paychecks were added up, she left here with $10,068 riding Jets Top Gun that she calls “Benny.” She is leading the world standings and is on pace to win a third world championship.

If she does that, it will be her first since 2009. She also won a gold buckle in 2007 and will compete at her 17th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in December where world titles are determined.

California’s Stan Branco is on pace to qualify for his second Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and a win in the steer wrestling at the Caldwell Night Rodeo is going to help him achieve his goal. He had a total time of 13.2 seconds on three runs to win $9,457. CNR photo by Hailey Rae.

Stan Branco from Chochilla, California left here with the steer wrestling buckle. He had a total time of 13.2 seconds to win $9,457. That money will help him secure his second trip to Las Vegas for the NFR. He was there 10 years ago, and is currently inside the top 15 in the world standings that qualify at 12th. The money he earned here should move him up a spot and give him a little more breathing room.

Taylor Broussard was probably the happiest cowboy here on Saturday. He finished second in the finals but had the highest overall score of 174 points on two horses. He was the first contestant to take the victory lap in front of the “Rowdies and Civies.” Broussard is just outside of the top 15 and has ground to make up to qualify for his second NFR.

History might have been made with a husband and wife winning titles on Saturday. Shelby Boisjoli won the breakaway roping with a total time of 8.7 seconds and then got to watch her husband Haven Meged in the tie-down roping. Meged also earned the championship with a total time of 25.8 seconds.

The team roping title went to Tayler Wade from Terrell, Texas, and Wesley Thorp from Throckmorton, Texas. They had a total time of 15.7 seconds on three runs. Ryder Wright of Beaver, Utah, rode two saddle bronc horses for 176.5 points for the win.

The bull riding featured one round of competition and Dustin Donovan Bouquet from Bourg, La., held on to the top spot with 88.5 points. The all-around winner was Brush Minton from Witter Springs, Calif., who earned $&,603 in tie-down roping and steer wrestling.

Plans are underway for the 100th edition of the Caldwell Night Rodeo which will be August 13-17, 2024.

  • Field set for Championship Finals at Cheyenne Frontier Days

Field set for Championship Finals at Cheyenne Frontier Days

CHEYENNE, Wyo., July 29, 2023 A sold-out rodeo crowd of more than 15,000 watched the final contestants in the Semi Finals at Cheyenne Frontier Days advance to Sunday’s Championship Finals.

Saturday was filled with surprises during the rodeo in every event. The bareback riding win went to reigning world champion Jess Pope from Waverly, Kansas. Pope got on the Three Hills Rodeo horse named Short Stuff Bucks for 86.5 points. That gives him the opportunity to win the title here for the first time. While seeing Pope do well here is no surprise, watching his friend and traveling partner Tim O’Connell come up short was. O’Connell nearly bucked off before the eight-second buzzer but managed to score 79, just short of qualifying for Sunday’s finals. The Zwingle, Iowa, native is a three-time world champion and a three-time champion here. He has won the last two titles in Frontier Park and was hoping to make it three in a row.

In the breakaway roping KeAnn Hayes was the first competitor out, put her name at the top of the leaderboard and it stayed there. The Blanchard, Oklahoma, cowgirl had a time of 3.5 seconds and will be hoping to add her name to the history books as a champion at the “Daddy of ‘em All.”

Jake Pratt may be from Ellensburg, Washington, but winning the tie-down roping here would be really special for him. After graduating from high school, he moved to Laramie to attend the University of Wyoming. He qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo while in Laramie and has fond memories from the Cowboy State. He had the fastest time on Saturday at 12.3 seconds and will rope again on Sunday.

South Dakota’s Cole Elshere and Lefty Holman who grew up in California tied in the saddle bronc riding. Elshere rode the Summit Pro Rodeo horse named Big John. Holman got on United Pro Rodeo’s Awesome Sauce. When the judges added up their scores, they each had an 85 by their names. Both have qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo but have yet to win a title here.

There was also a tie in Saturday’s team roping at 8.9 seconds and all four men hale from Oklahoma. Curry Kirchner from Ames did the heading for Billy Jack Saebens from Nowata to set the pace. Three teams later, Corben Culley (header) from Muse, and Blayne Horne (heeler) from McAlester had an identical time.

The winner in the steer wrestling was Dakota Eldridge from Elko, Nevada. The nine-time NFR qualifier stopped the clock in 6.6 seconds and has a chance to win his first buckle from Cheyenne. Eldridge got to see his nephew, Lefty Holman, win in the saddle bronc riding.

Leslie Smalygo finished as the reserve champion in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel race here last year. She had the fast time on Saturday and the Skiatook, Oklahoma resident will be a favorite for the championship.

When bull riders get hurt, there may be an option for a healthy rider to take his place. That’s what happened in the bull riding. Bryce Jensen, a recent high school graduate from Huntsville, Texas, competed in the Quarter Finals, advanced to the Semi Finals where he was the winner on Saturday. He scored 89.5 points on Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Redneck Romeo and will compete for the title on Sunday. If he wins, he will be one of the youngest CFD champions on record.

Stetson Wright, from Beaver, Utah, who won the last two saddle bronc riding titles in Frontier Park won’t be able to repeat. He rode here in that event on Saturday and fell short of the top six scores that advance. He was among Friday’s bull riders and will have an opportunity to win that title for the second time in his career. He also is a favorite to win the prestigious all-around award that goes to the contestant who wins the most money in more than one event.

Rodeo action at Frontier Park starts at 12:45 on Sunday where champions in all of these events will be crowned.

  • Whitaker hoping for big payday at “Daddy of ‘em All”

Whitaker hoping for big payday at “Daddy of ‘em All”

CHEYENNE, Wyo., July 23, 2023 Cheyenne Frontier Days is known for taking rodeo contestants out of their comfort zones.

Frontier Days boasts a big arena and animals have a lot of ground to cover. Nowhere is that more evident than in the timed events and it often takes a “never quit” mentality to get the job done. No one knows that better than Kyle Whitaker who has been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 1995. Whitaker moved to the top of the leaderboard in steer wrestling with a 7.1-second run and is moving onto the Semi Finals.

The Nebraska native has been coming to Cheyenne nearly every year since then and in the early days would also enter the tie-down roping and saddle bronc riding. His prowess in rough stock and timed events has earned him the prestigious Linderman Award a record six times.

Now when he competes, he specializes in steer wrestling and that paid off for him here. He now lives in Bozeman, Montana, where he works as the rodeo coach at Montana State University. If his success here continues, he could win his first championship at the “Daddy of ‘em All.”

Tuesday’s saddle bronc riding competition was extremely competitive with a star-studded field, but the riders had their challenges in the big arena as well. Shorty Garrett, from Eagle Butte, South Dakota,  ended up at the top of the board with 85.5-point ride on his second horse of the day. He got on a re-ride after an equipment failure and made the best of it. His success came aboard Stace Smith Rodeo’s horse named Levi the Boss.

Lefty Holman from Visalia, California, and Orin Larsen from Inglis, Manitoba, both kept their momentum going here. Last Sunday, Holman was crowned bareback champion and Larsen won the saddle bronc riding at California Rodeo Salinas. They both will be advancing to the Semi Finals here after finishing second in their respective events.

The bareback riding winner was Bill Tutor from Huntsville, Texas, who has one Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification to his credit. Tutor was one-half point ahead of Larsen at 85 on Rocky Mountain Rodeo’s Cracked Pepper. Larsen also won the bareback riding in Frontier Park in 2016.

Taycie Matthews from Wynne, Arkansas is another Salinas champion who competed here today. The reigning National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion is loving being in Wyoming again. She won her college title in Casper last month. Matthews, who is a junior at the University of West Alabama, was 11th in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings in mid-July and is hoping to secure her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification. A win here would certainly help her do that. PRCA photo by Click Thompson

  • 104th Cody Stampede Rodeo closes with a bang

104th Cody Stampede Rodeo closes with a bang

CODY, Wyo., July 4, 2023 In spite of mud, a unseasonably cool temperatures, the final performance of this year’s Cody Stamped Rodeo offered plenty of excitement, or maybe it was because of the mud.

Cowboys and cowgirls had plenty to clean up after making an appearance at Stampede Park on the Fourth of July and some of them did it with a big smile on their face. At the top of that list is Stetson Wright from Milford, Utah.

The four-time world champion all-around cowboy showed fans here just why he has earned that title. He competed in the saddle bronc riding and placed fourth. Then he brushed off a little mud and got ready for the bull riding.

The bull he got on was Pokerface from Frontier Rodeo Company. Wright matched him move for move and when the judges added up their scores, Stetson had a 90-by his name. His ride came after Tristen Hutchings, the reigning National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion scored an 89. Wright’s win added $10,039 to his season earnings. Before the lucrative Fourth-of-July holiday, known as Cowboy Christmas, he was third in the world standings with $131,513. His traveling partner Ky Hamilton is first in the standings and has a $10,000 lead.

Wright’s check in the saddle bronc riding was for $3,557 making him the big money winner at the 104th edition of the Cody Stamped. He earned $13,596 from the rodeo which paid nearly $400,000 to athletes. Next in line at the pay window was barrel racer Paige Jones from Wayne, Oklahoma, who stopped the clock in 17.20 seconds during the third performance of the rodeo. She was 16th in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings prior to the win. It should move her into the top 15 and give her an opportunity to make her first trip to Las Vegas to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

The 104th Cody Stampede Rodeo is part of the Cinch Playoff Series, so contestants are earning points to qualify for events at the end of the season that could seal their trip to Las Vegas in December to compete for world championships. The third and fourth performances were both sold out and other performances were near capacity. The Cody Nite Rodeo gets back on schedule July 5, and runs through the end of August with rising stars advancing their skills.

  • College Rodeo Crowns 2023 Champions

    College Rodeo Crowns 2023 Champions

CASPER, Wyo. (June 17, 2023) – Championship Saturday at the 2023 College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) began with the top 12 student athletes in nine events roping and riding for individual and team honors, The night ended with the crowning of 10 individual and two all-around national champions along with new women’s and men’s national champion teams.

The night began with bareback riding. Kade Sonnier, a graduate student in health and human performance at McNeese State University, qualified in eighth place in the finals but made a bid for the title when he scored 84.5 points on Vold Rodeo’s horse Brubby Spoon. Sonnier’s total of 314 points on four rounds held first place until the final bareback rider of the night.

Weston Timberman, who was born and raised in Casper before moving to Columbus, Montana, came in with the highest total after the first three rounds. Rodeo insiders were anticipating the matchup between Timberman and Vold’s horse Crossbreed’s Captain Hook – the horse Missouri Valley College’s Ty Pope rode to win last year’s title. The freshman science major at Clarendon College matched Sonnier’s score of 84.5 and won the championship by 11 points. Timberman was instrumental in Clarendon College winning another men’s team championship and also earned men’s rookie of the year honors.

Kincade Henry of Mount Pleasant, Texas, became one of the few tie-down ropers to win back-to-back college championships. The junior ag business major at Texas A & M University – Commerce came into the finals with a 2.7-second overall lead. His time of 10.5 seconds was good enough for second in the round and his second consecutive college title.

The first upset of the night came in breakaway roping. Makayla Farkas of Leona Valley, California, was in third place when the night began. The senior kinesiology major at West Hills College tied for second in the round with a time of 2.7 seconds and roped the championship with 10.9 seconds on four runs.

The saddle bronc riding had been a battle all week with a single point separating Quintin McWhorter of California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo and Damian Brennan of Western Texas College. The pair were the final two cowboys to compete with McWhorter, an ag education graduate student from Petrolia, California, going first. McWhorter scored 85 points on Vold Rodeo Company’s bronc named Jerry’s Justice for 323.5 total points. Brennan, an Australian who just wrapped up his junior year in farm and ranch management, and Vold’s bronc Moon Valley combined for 84 points, tied for second in the round and matched McWhorter’s total. Both athletes were crowned national saddle bronc riding champions.

JT Ellison, a senior at the University of West Alabama, came into the finals with a three-second lead overall. As the final competitor in steer wrestling Ellison, who majored in cell and molecular biology, made a business-like run of 6.7 and won the championship by 1.3 seconds.

The goat tying was the tightest event with six-tenths of a second separating the top eight finalists when the night began. Almost every cowgirl clocked a time in the six-second range. When the dust settled Montana State University senior Paige Rasmussen jumped from third to first overall when she won the final round with a time of 6.0 seconds. The psychology major from Bozeman won the all-around cowgirl national championship here in 2021, but this was her first individual national title.

A pair of Texans took national honors in the team roping. Slade Wood, a freshman from New Ulm, and Logan Moore, a junior from Pleasanton, held a lead of almost two seconds when Saturday’s action began. They finished second in the round and were named champion header and heeler, respectively. Wood is a business major representing Southwest Texas Junior College and Moore is a wildlife biology major at Wharton County Junior College.

Taycie Matthews of Wynne, Arkansas, won her first national title in her third trip to the CNFR. Matthews, a junior business major at the University of West Alabama, won two of the first three rounds and finished second in the other. She was the 12th barrel racer to compete in the finals and her time of 13.94 was good enough for second in the round and won the championship by 32-hundredths of a second. Three of the 12 finalists in barrel racing were from the University of West Alabama and Matthews led her team to the school’s first women’s team championship.

The night ended with Tristan Hutchings winning his second collegiate bull riding championship in three years. The Idaho native just wrapped up his senior year at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, with a degree in agriculture. Ironically, he drew the same bull that cost him the 2022 bull riding title here – Vold Rodeo Co’s Night Trip. Although he bucked off at 7.56 seconds, Hutchings won the title as the only bull rider to make three qualified rides this week.

The men’s all-around title went to Quade Hiatt of Canyon, Texas, a junior business marketing major at West Texas A & M University. He and partner Jace Helton of Weatherford College finished as reserve champions in team roping. Hiatt also finished fifth in tie-down roping.

Freshman Haiden Thompson of Yoder, Wyoming, won both the women’s all-around and rookie of the year titles. A business major at Gillette College, Thompson qualified for the finals in both breakaway roping and team roping.

The 2024 College National Finals Rodeo returns to Casper next June.

CASPER, Wyo. (June 15, 2023) – A collegiate champion who has already made a mark in the pro ranks has dominated the bull riding at the College National Finals Rodeo at the Ford Wyoming Center.
Tristan Hutchings of Monteview, Idaho, won his first collegiate bull riding championship in 2021. He finished as reserve champion here last year and qualified for his first National Finals Rodeo (NFR) as a professional. In Las Vegas he won four of the ten rounds and finished third for the world title.
This year in Casper, Hutchings is the only bull rider to make three qualified rides. His 84-point score on Vold Rodeo Company’s bull Icecube Thursday night put him first in round three. He finished second in both the first and second rounds. The recent college graduate will have to wait until Friday night’s competition is over to see how he finishes in the third round. Just an attempt to ride in Saturday’s championship round will clinch his second collegiate title in three years. Hutchings just wrapped up his senior year at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, with a degree in agriculture and is currently ranked 12th in the professional standings.
Damian Brennan, a junior majoring in farm and ranch management at Western Texas College, took the lead in saddle bronc riding. Brennan, a native of Queensland, Australia, scored 81 points on Frontier Rodeo’s bronc named Delta Force to take the lead in round three. His total of 239.5 points gave him a 1.5-point edge in the overall standings. Isaac Richard, a junior agriculture major at McNeese State University, scored 77 points to tie for third in round three and hold on to second place overall.
Last year Brennan finished one spot short of qualifying for his first NFR and earned the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rookie of the Year title. Both he and Richard will be among the 12 bronc riders to compete for the championship on Saturday night.
The overall leader changed in four other events on Thursday night. Student athletes taking the top spot after three rides or runs included bareback rider Weston Timberman of Clarendon College; steer wrestler JT Ellison of the University of West Alabama; team ropers Slade Wood of Southwest Texas Junior College and Logan Moore of Wharton County Junior College; and barrel racer Taycie Matthews of the University of West Alabama.
Round three at the 2023 CNFR concludes Friday night at 7 p.m. MDT. Once round three is completed the top 12 overall will compete once more on Championship Saturday to determine the champions in nine events, The men’s and women’s all-around champions, the men’s and women’s team champions and the men’s and women’s rookie of the year will also be crowned on Saturday.

2023 CNFR competition kicks off with Bulls Broncs & Breakaway

CASPER, Wyo. (June 11, 2023) — When college rodeo athletes have opportunities to win national titles, they give it their all time after time.

That has been the case at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) and as the 73rd edition kicked off Sunday at the Fort Wyoming Center in Casper, it was evident once again. Competition kicked off with the Bulls Broncs and Breakaway. Qualifying for the CNFR is a lofty goal for students pursuing degrees. Maggie Usher, also from Cal Poly and Sydney Theobald who attends Black Hills State University finish the top four out. Each of them stopped the clock in 2.4 seconds.

Third generation rodeo competitor Weston Timberman who is a freshman at Clarendon College won the bareback riding with an 81.5-point score.

Winning the saddle bronc riding was Quintin McWhorter who is representing the Cal Poly State University men’s team.

Competition here features three full rounds in each event. These competitors will have their second round during slack on Monday and Tuesday. The steer wrestling, barrel racing, team roping, goat tying, and tie-down roping contestants will complete their first round on Monday.

  • Champions crowned at FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament

Champions crowned at FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament

FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 4, 2023)—The $1.2 million FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament came to a rousing close on Saturday, February 4, in Dickies Arena.

No one was more excited to win their first championships at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo than bareback rider Rocker Steiner and barrel racer Jackie Ganter. Steiner, who calls nearby Weatherford home, made a 90-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Yipee Kibitz. This was the second matchup for Steiner and the bucking horse. The last time the two met, Steiner won the Calgary Stampede in Alberta last July riding, so the 19-year-old was super excited to get on the horse again.

The ride on Saturday added $20,000 to Steiner’s earnings. Prior to Fort Worth’s rodeo, he was 13th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. With his success in the brackets and the semifinals as well as the championship round, he added $27,080 which will give him a big boost on his way to his second consecutive Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualification.

“This win is really special,” Steiner said. “It’s close to home, the fans are great, and I just love that horse.”

An emotional Jackie Ganter, from Abilene, Texas, got the win in the barrel racing. Riding her great gelding Howes a Tycoon, she stopped the clock in 16.30 seconds, the same time that she had when she won the wildcard round. Ganter and Tycoon made four trips around the barrels to have the opportunity to run on Saturday. They watched as two-time FWSSR champion Hailey Kinsel stopped the clock in 16.35 seconds.

Ganter and Tycoon earned $25,260 here. They were seventh in the world standings before and with their earnings here they will be very close to the number one spot. She has qualified for the NFR twice in 2015 and 2016. With her success here and her blazing fast horse, the former hunter-jumper equestrian is on track to make a third trip to Las Vegas this year.

Will Lummus, a college rodeo coach from Byhalia, Mississippi, punched his ticket in the steer wrestling with a 4.1-second run. The horse he rode was Be Dun By Three, nicknamed “Benz”, owned by Clayton Hass. While this was a great rodeo for Lummus, who earned a total of $27,080 here, it was even better for Benz. Ty Erickson, from Helena, Montana also rode Benz and finished second for the championship. Benz earned $32,000 for his riders on Saturday night.

The saddle bronc riding ended in a tie, and it was a big one. Stetson Wright of Milford, Utah and Dawson Hay from Wildwood, Alberta, each had 90.5 point rides to win $16,000. They both rode horses from the Calgary Stampede. Wright got on Xena Warrior and Hay rode Tokyo Bubbles.

In the breakaway roping, Cheyanne Guillory caught the win with a 1.9-second run. The National Finals Breakaway Roping qualifier earned a total of $26,193 to take back home to Kingston, Oklahoma.

A Texan took the top spot in tie-down roping. Weston Hughes from Cameron stopped the clock in 7.4 seconds for the win. He earned a total of $25,200 here and said, “It couldn’t have happened at a better time.”

Andrew Ward from Edmond, Oklahoma and his brother-in-law Buddy Hawkins II, who lives in Stephenville, Texas, had the fastest team roping run of the night at 3.9 seconds. This is the second time Hawkins has won this rodeo. He also won it in 2014 roping with Drew Horner. Ward and Hawkins have roped together twice at the NFR and are looking good for another trip to Las Vegas this year.

The best two bull riders in the PRCA in 2022 took the top two places in bull riding. Reigning world champion Stetson Wright made the night’s first successful ride on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s bull Dances With Monsters to earn a score of 87.5 points. After a few other riders hit the dirt, 2022 reserve world champ Josh Frost tried his luck on Rafter G Rodeo’s High Brow Cat. Frost’s 90.5-point score gave him the FWSSR signature square trophy buckle. He took home $23,787. Wright added $18,347 in bull riding money to his winnings, boosting his total from Fort Worth to nearly $41,500.

The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is the biggest rodeo so far in the 2023 season. It is one of the big indoor rodeos that can jump start a contestant’s year. Plans are underway for the 127th Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo which will start on January 12 of 2024.

The saddle bronc rider is coming off his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification where he finished the 2022 season in 11th place. He’s already inside the top fifteen for 2023, and a win here could give him a big boost.

Bruno won round 1 of Bracket 5 Friday night. Then he came back Saturday morning and won again. On Saturday, it was the horse named Utopia from Stace Smith Pro Rodeo that got him the win. When the judges added up their scores, he had 85.5 points beside his name. That put him at the top of the leaderboard and earned him $1,760 for the second time in a row. Most importantly, it put him on the list of those advancing to the semifinals here.

Also winning round 2 of this bracket was Rocker Steiner who lives just west of Fort Worth in Weatherford. Steiner rode Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Betty’s Boy for 87. The $1,760 that he earned Saturday morning gave him a total of $3,080 earned here so far. He also is advancing to the semifinals.

There are just two brackets of competition left in this year’s rodeo. Bracket 6 starts Saturday night at 7:30. It will finish on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday’s competition features Bracket 7. The Wildcard round starts on Wednesday and Semifinals will be Thursday and Friday. At each level of the tournament, competitors start with a clean slate hoping to advance to Saturday night’s Finals where the champions will be crowned.

  • Wyoming bronc rider sets arena record at FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament

Wyoming bronc rider sets arena record at FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament

FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 25, 2023)—There are several reasons that the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) was selected as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year, and one of those is the animals.

The rodeo also received the 2022 Remuda Award because of the livestock that was featured in competition in Dickies Arena. This year’s rodeo draws 20 different stock contractors from across North America who bring their best to be part of the $1.2 million FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament.

With the animals and the cowboys getting scores in bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding, it’s important to have bucking stock that provide the best opportunity. Tanner Butner from Daniel, Wyoming has been on both sides of the equation and was really excited to be on the top here on Tuesday night.

Butner, who is coming off his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) was the saddle bronc riding star of Bracket 3. He was the last man to ride on Wednesday night and moved high on the top of the leaderboard with an outstanding ride aboard Andrews Rodeo Company’s horse named All or Nothin’. Not only did he win first place; he added his name to the history books with a 94-point ride setting an FWSSR record for the highest marked ride in the history of the rodeo.

Butner failed to cash in during Tuesday night’s first round, but by virtue of his performance on Wednesday, he will be back in Fort Worth for the semifinals. Butner’s traveling partner, Sage Newman from Melstone, Montana, finished at the top of the bracket after getting two second-place finishes. Newman won $2,640 in the bracket. Butner finished second with $1,760.

The stars of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association were at the top of the leaderboard for the second night in a row. Kelsie Domer, last year’s Fort Worth breakaway roping champion, finished in first place in both rounds. She has earned $3,520 here so far and will advance to the semifinals.

Domer, of Dublin, Texas, finished 20th in the world last year, thanks in part to a FWSSR win. She competed through May of the 2022 season, but then stayed home preparing for the birth of her and husband Ryan Domer’s first child, Oaklynn, who arrived in August.

Jordon Briggs won this rodeo in 2009 and is on pace to do it again. The Tolar, Texas, resident finished first in both rounds with times of 16.58 and 16.47 respectively. She also has earned $3,520 and will advance to the semifinals.

Korbin Rice, from Hobbs, New Mexico, and Reed Lewis Boos, from White Cloud, Kansas, have not made it to the NFR, and are not the most well-known team ropers in the field. That could change. They qualified for the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament by winning the Johnson County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo in Cleburne, Texas, last June. Being the new kids on the block didn’t faze them one bit.

With Rice doing the heading and Boos heeling, they stopped the clock in 5.4 seconds in round one, good for third place. They finished second in round 2 with a 6.6. Qualifying to compete here was a big step. Now they are taking the next step toward the championship by advancing to the semifinals with $2,200 won.

Bracket 4 starts in Dickies Arena on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

  • National Western Stock Show Rodeo winding down

National Western Stock Show Rodeo winding down

DENVER, Colo. (January 21, 2023) — There is just one performance left at the National Western Stock Show presented by Centura Health and it promises to have some of the most exciting action yet.

Three semifinals rodeo performances were held on Saturday and the sold-out crowds enjoyed every bit of the rodeo action. Saturday night was especially exciting for barrel racer Darby Fox from King Hill, Idaho.

The National Western Stock Show Rodeo started off on Thursday, January 12 with the first of eight brackets. In the timed events, contestants competed in a qualifying event or got in based on their standings in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. The bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding was all based on standings.

The rodeo started out with 80 contestants in each event competing in one of eight brackets. Three of the contestants from every event then advanced to the semifinals based on how they finished in the individual brackets. Those 24 contestants were divided into three semifinals performances held in the Denver Coliseum on Saturday.

Fox was one of the barrel racers that qualified for the rodeo performances. Then she became the only woman to have to runs less than 15 seconds in a bracket. She was at the top of the leaderboard in Bracket six. When she made her run in semifinals three there was a 15.04-second time by her name and she once again was at the top.

Fox has been riding a mare that she bought as a yearling and trained herself. She started seasoning her in 2022 and the experience paid off for both of them. Last year, she won $10,086 at rodeos. Thanks to her success in Denver, she has already collected $7,776 and stands to win more on Sunday.

The reigning world champion all-around cowboy and bull rider, Stetson Wright from Milford, Utah is hoping to add his name to the winners list here and join members of  his legendary family that have already clamed championships in the Denver Coliseum, including his father, Cody Wright, uncle Spencer Wright and brother Rusty Wright.

Stetson competed in the semifinals in both of his signature events, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. He has already won money in both of those events and everything he wins here will help jumpstart the year and put him in contention for more gold buckles. At 23-years-old, he has seven world titles on his resume already, four all-around, two in the bull riding and one in saddle bronc.

Sunday will be the final day of the 117th National Western’s 16-day run. The rodeo will begin at 2 p.m. and will be aired live on the Cowboy Channel.
