Mike Lee was excited to be getting on Bushwacker. In front of the first Touring Pro Division sellout crowd in Salinas in the 14 years this bull riding-only event has come to town, Lee put one of the most courageous efforts, though not one of the most successful, Wednesday at the Salinas Sports Complex in front of about 12,000 rodeo fans. At stake was a $10,000 jackpot if Lee, who already ridden more than 100 bulls this season for the ninth year in a row, could last the required eight seconds. Bushwacker came literally flying out of the chute, at times with all four legs were off the ground. Lee started strong, but about four seconds into the airborne ride couldn’t hang on any longer. Winner and still champion, Bushwacker. No one has ridden him this year in 10 tries. Lee rides bulls full time and has a small trucking business as well. His wife and baby boy were with him last night. He was entered in the event twice and had a reride, so he had been on a total of five bulls before he got on Bushwacker. Julio Marino owns Bush Wacker. THe bull was out of Raindeer, who was a grandson of Oscar and the cow was Diamond Ghost. This ride makes nine attempts in 2014 to make a qualified ride – and nobody has done so yet. South Carolina Bareback Rider takes 7th round
It took 32 hours for Tim Murphy and his family to make the drive from Simpsonville, S.C., to southwestern Wyoming, but every mile is paying off for the cowboy at the NHSFR.
Tim topped his second-round draw for 71 points on Wednesday night in the rodeo’s seventh performance to move to the lead in the second round and the average with five performances remaining before we cut down to the top 20 for the short round.
“That horse was pretty strong for how little he was,” Tim said just moments after his second ride of the day. “He kind of surprised me with that first big kick out there and got me rocked on my handle a little bit. Other than that he was pretty fun. I watched video on him, but the boy lasted two jumps. I knew that big kick was coming, but I didn’t expect a big snatch and everything. He was really strong. I liked that it was pretty fun.”
While he initially dreaded the fact that he drew up in the two Wednesday performances, things came together nicely for the 17-year-old who just finished his junior year. He started the day with a 69-point ride on a little buckskin horse that provided a nice solid ride.
“Yeah, when I saw I was up on Wednesday, at first I was like, ‘Eh,” he said. “But it worked out pretty good for me today. After that first one, I was ready to get on another one today.”
In between his two rides, Tim hung out and took it easy as he tried to stay relaxed. He admitted to being nervous before the first-round ride, but put those nerves behind him with his first ride and was ready to go when he climbed down into the chute on Wednesday evening.
“I came here to win it,” he said. “I didn’t do much here last year. We don’t see horses like these back home much, but I’ve been riding longer this year, so I was

Jace Lane competes in four events
Jace Lane entered the International Finals Youth Rodeo in four events. This busy cowboy from Morse, Texas competes in steer wrestling, team roping, calf roping and saddle bronc riding. “I like riding broncs best, I’ve worked the hardest at it and it’s what my dad did.” He started riding broncs in the summer of his eighth grade year. He practiced at Panhandle State, under the instruction of Robert Etbauer. Jace graduated Salutatorian with a class of 32 from Gruver High School. He takes his education seriously, graduating with 27 hours of college credits under his belt. He has the gift of remembering anything he reads, and he puts studying first, planning on becoming a vet. He balances rodeo and school by managing his time wisely. “My routine after school was to come home, get one subject of homework knocked out, practice until dark, and study.” The combination has paid off. He won All Around for the last three years in his region, and won it at state. He is currently holding the All Around spot at the IFYR for 2014. “Nationals (National High School Finals Rodeo) didn’t pan out for the last two years; I had mental breakdowns and got bucked off. Usually if I start thinking too much I come off to the left, I get out of my saddle, and look off. Where you look is where you go,” he said. His dad (Justin) works for a rancher. “He has a bunch of land,” said Jace. “We run 8,000 wheat pasture calves so I get lots of roping practice. Depending on the horse, I get lots of bronc practice too.” His mom, Shannon, is a teacher. He has an older brother, Tyler, who is a petroleum engineer, and a younger sister, Jaylee. Both rodeoed through school. Jace will start in the fall at Tarleton. “I got the best rodeo offer from there, along with schooling.” He will rodeo for the team there, but plans to put rodeo aside when he enters vet school. “I would keep rodeoing if I didn’t have all the education plans I have. I’ve always wanted to be a vet. I definitely want to go to the college finals rodeo all three years.” He does not plan to give up rodeo forever. “I’ll be around it once I become a vet and that’s what I want my kids to do, so it will always be a part of me. It Runs in the Family
Laramie Girty has been competing at the International Finals Youth Rodeo for three years. This year is a special year as she gets to be part of the Hall of Fame induction ceremony of her brother, Justin McDaniel. “I’m proud of him. He gives me good advice and I pester him and tell him I’m going to be better than him at bareback riding if mom and dad would give me a chance. My mare always bucks with me, so I always tell him that I can outride him.”
The 17-year-old from Porum, Okla., competes in barrels and poles and favors the barrel racing because she and her horse, Nugget, are better at it. “I’ve had him since I was six, we are the same age together,” she said. Laramie started competing when she was three. “Justin would lead line me when I was little in the barrels,” she recalls. Her brother, Tanner, competed as well and she grew up watching Justin compete. She was four when she started competing on her own. Along with rodeo, Laramie plays basketball, where she is a starter, and track. She will graduate next year with a class of 30. She likes to hang out with friends and swim at the nearby lakes and cliffs.
Her goals for the future include going to college at Connors first for her basics and then OSU to become a vet. “I want to be a general vet.” She also wants to fill out her permit for the WPRA and make the Finals. “I’m training this mare that I have right now and she’s bred to run. Impressive and Dash for Cash.” Training her mare is something that has come natural to her. “I trained my horse now and some other horses. I have a gift for it – it happens. I like doing it, so it doesn’t bother me to go out there and work. I call Justin’s girlfriend, Blazi, who runs barrels, and she helps me.” She’s sitting in the middle of the pack for this year’s IFYR and is looking forward to the hitting the road for the rest of the summer. She competes in barrel races and open rodeos around Oklahoma and Texas.
Laramie is the daughter of Janie, who works at the Post Office and Tony, who does construction work. They were all present for the induction ceremony held on July 9. Justin was unable to be in Shawnee for the induction as he was competing in Calgary, currently sitting sixth after 8 perfs. Justin competed in the IFYR in 2003 and 2004, winning back to back bareback championships and the All Around title in 2004. “It’s been 10 years,” he said from Calgary. “The IFYR is great stepping stone. That was the biggest thing at the time and means as much as any championship.” He qualified for the IFR when he was 16, in bulls. He went back the next year, 2004, and rode all four bulls won the average. That was the same two years he won the bareback title in IFYR. The 4x NFR qualifier and 2008 Bareback Champion still shares the arena record with Will Lowe that record was set in 2007 riding Delta Ship in round 3of the NFR. His recent win in Reno brought this cowboy over the $1 Million mark.
His sign is proudly displayed in the town: Home of 2008 World Champion Bareback Rider. “My sign is going to be above his soon,” said Laramie.

International Finals Youth Rodeo First Go Winners
Clayton Biglow is one of two 2013 IFYR Champions trying to make a repeat performance at the 2014 IFYR. So far, it’s looking pretty good for the 18-year-old from Clements, California. He is leading the bareback riding after the first round and is the high score for the second round. He started riding bareback horses as a sophomore in high school, but has been involved in rodeo his whole life. “Rodeo found me. My dad (Russ) rode bucking horses and my mom (Jessie) was in the show world, jumping horses.” His sister, Taylor, runs barrel and breakaway ropes and his youngest sister, Maddie, runs barrel, poles, and jumps. “Jumping helps with balance,” Clayton explains. “Mom trains jumping horses. She’s got 15 to ride every day and I help ride them.”
Clayton won the 2013 and 2014 Bareback Champion for California High School Rodeo and split the win at the 2013 National High School Finals Rodeo. He will head to Rock Springs to compete in the bareback riding and team roping. He won the bareback riding last year in Shawnee and took home a saddle, lots of Cinch jeans, a buckle, and $2,500. “It’s the richest high school rodeo I’ve ever been to.” Now sitting fourth in the Columbian River Circuit, he admits that he hasn’t won that much in one rodeo since.
Clayton is heading to Feather River College in California, and plans to apply to CalPoly. He wants to go for a degree in Ag Business and will use his degree to help him with a cattle business when he retires from rodeo. His rodeo plans include riding on his permit and then making a run for Rookie of the Year.
He hits at least 50 rodeos a year between high school and pro. “It’s a full time job.” His favorite part is the people he meets. “You will never have friends like you have in rodeo. You are never against each other. It’s not the highest paying job, but you will have more fun.”

Taylor Howell, from Adon, Calif., outside Los Angeles, heard about the IFYR through an old world champion, Bill Cameron. The bareback rider did his research and decided to head east and give it a try. He got on his first bareback horse a little over a year ago at a high school rodeo. “I drew a big old stout horse and was upside down after four seconds. She launched me 13 feet up and every which way but good. From then on it’s been a work in progress,” he said. “I take something positive from every horse.”Taylor relies on his fellow rough stock riders to set his rigging and help him get down the road. He lost his vision to a rare retinal cancer at the age of two and has been legally blind ever since. “It’s all done by feel and hearing,” he said of his routine behind the chutes and life in general. “I memorize where everything is in my bag.” Once his rigging is set, he can take it from there. “I can feel the horse and he knows I’m there. Everything else is about getting comfortable.” Taylor believes that the inability to see is an advantage once the gate is open. “Once that horse leaves, you’ve got to be lifting on the rigging to feel the horse,” he explained. “You get on some dirty horses, and you can get faked out if you can see.” The most dangerous part of the ride is the dismount. “I think the toughest thing, and that goes for everybody, whether you can see or not, is getting off. Everything is happening at once. The pick up men are good about talking to me the whole time about when to get off. But I’ve been hung up, kicked in the head, and thrown in the fence.” He is helped out of the arena by his fellow contestants and always ready to ride again.
Taylor was raised around trail horses, and grew up riding colts. “You ride with your legs,” he said. He had been around rodeo through his uncles and cousins and has done some roping, relying on a bell to hear where the calf is. Taylor knew he wanted to get on bucking horses, and picked bareback over saddle bronc based on the cost to start. “A rigging cost less, and once I got on my first one, I was told I was a natural at it and it’s starting to work out good.” He took second at a recent rodeo, riding for a score of 71.
He made contact with another bareback rider through Facebook who was blind in one eye. Brad Gower became his mentor and brought him to Oklahoma where he became friends with Willie Clyde McKinney and Ben Meek, two IFYR contestants. The three have become instant friends. “We met him and he changed us,” said Clyde. “I thought you had to see to ride, now I know it’s all about feel.”
The three are heading to Connors State College in Warner, Okla. in the fall to rodeo and further their education. Jacob Lawson, rodeo coach for Connors State College, has welcomed Taylor to the team. “He seems like a really nice young man. We’ve had a couple kids go through our horse program that are visually impaired and he will start this fall.”
Rodeo has brought Taylor from California to Oklahoma. He has not let his lack of vision stop him from achieving his dreams. “I’m looking forward to this summer with these two”
“He’s going to change the way people look at a rodeo career,” concluded Clyde. “Everybody can do something in the sport of rodeo.”
Taylor agrees. “Looking back now, I wouldn’t change anything.”

International Finals Youth Rodeo Names Newest Hall of Fame Member
(SHAWNEE, Okla.) – The International Finals Youth Rodeo will induct Justin McDaniel of Porum, Okla., into its 2014 Hall of Fame in a ceremony on July 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center in Shawnee. “I would like to thank the IFYR for the induction into the Hall of Fame. Some of my greatest memories and accomplishments come from the IFYR. It was my goal to win multiple titles while I was competing at the IFYR, and I was very blessed to have won three championships, said McDaniel. “The IFYR was the biggest playing field for me at the time, competing against the greatest high school contestants from around the world,” he added. “I’m very sorry to announce that I will not be able to make it to the induction. I’m still competing full time and currently ranked in the top 10 in the PRCA World Standings and chasing another world title,” McDaniel said. “The Calgary Stampede gave me the call at the last minute and invited me up for a chance to compete for $100,000. It is an offer I can’t refuse. I would like to thank everyone again for the induction it is truly an honor.” McDaniel is 27 years old and was the IFYR bareback champion in 2003 and 2004 and won the all-around competition in 2004. After high school McDaniel became a professional rider and joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, winning the bareback riding world title in 2008. McDaniel is a five time National Finals Rodeo qualifier. He has also won the National Finals Rodeo average title twice. McDaniel currently rodeos full-time while raising cattle on his ranch in Porum, Okla. “We would like to welcome Justin McDaniel into the Hall of Fame and recognize his accomplishments as a past contestant of the IFYR,” said Mike Jackson, operations manager of the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center. “He excelled in several years of competition at the IFYR and continues to do so in his professional rodeo career, while contributing to the sport of rodeo.” Mike Outhier became the first IFYR Hall of Fame inductee in 2007. Previous inductees include Jet and Cord McCoy and the late Mark McGee in 2009, Jackie Dube Jatslau in 2011 and Ken Etchieson and Suzanne Gilbert in 2012. To qualify and become a Hall of Fame member, inductees must have competed in the IFYR at least 10 years prior and still be participating in the rodeo world. A selection committee reviews nominee records and in-turn makes a recommendation to the Civic and Cultural Development Authority that governs the IFYR. College National Finals Rodeo coming to a close
CASPER, Wyo. (June 20, 2014) – Friday night at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) was a good night for three of the defending National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champions.
Orin Larsen won the bareback riding here in 2013 for the College of Southern Idaho. He was 80 points, placing him in the third round and moving him into second place in the overall standings. Larsen, from Inglis, Manitoba, is now competing for Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla.
Billy Bob Brown and Logan Medlin are the defending team roping champions and will be back here to try to win consecutive titles thanks to their performance on Friday night. With Brown, from Tarleton State University doing the heading and Medlin, from Eastern New Mexico University heeling, they stopped the clock in 6.2 to move into second place overall. They also placed fifth in the third round. Brown is the defending all-around champion and is third in the race for this year’s title.
Another defending champion that is entering the final round in second place is Kimberlyn Fitch from Idaho State University. Fitch got married and has had a name change since winning the breakaway roping last year. In 2013 she earned the title as Kimberlyn Fehringer.
Eastern New Mexico University’s Hayden Segelke has two NIRA all-around titles to her credit but will just be in contention for the goat tying this year. She leads the overall standings with a total time of 19.3 seconds on three runs.
Competition continues in the Casper Events Center on Saturday with the final performance featuring all of the events beginning at 7 p.m., where world champions will be determined.

Gordon Hodson
Gordon grew up in Burlington, Wyo., between Cody and Greybull. “A little dirt farm,” said the 78-year-old who calls Torrington, Wyo., home. His family (three brothers and three sisters) had a farm where they raised hay, beans, cattle, sheep, and hogs. “We lived five miles from town and we didn’t have transportation like they have today. We rode horse back to town if we wanted to go.” At 16, he left home and headed to Cody for the Cody Nite Rodeo. “I rode broncs, bull dogged, and roped calves,” he said. “For entry fee money, I painted houses for $1 a day.” He went to the Pitchfork Ranch in Meeteetse and rode horses for Margo Woodhouse for a year and then he went to work for Bud Pilcher, and finally settled into the construction business building houses.
He met his wife (Mary Ann) at the Pitchfork Ranch. “She came over there because her sister lived there,” he said. They dated for six months and got married October 14, 1955. “We were both 19. I was a carpenter.” They both wanted the same thing – a ranch and a family – and they worked hard together to make it happen. The Army drafted Gordon in 1957. That put their dreams on hold. “I got paid $75 a month and had to quit my job.” He went to California for training and Alabama for chemical school, and ended up in North Carolina. “I rodeoed in Ft. Bragg,” he said. “The first indoor arena I’ve ever been in was in Greensboro, North Carolina. I talked the engineers in to building us an outdoor arena at Ft. Bragg to practice.”
