Bubble cowboys qualify for WNFR on last weekend

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a 10-year absence, bull rider Beau Hill is headed back to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as one of a handful of contestants who made the Big Show in Las Vegas during a frantic final week of the regular season.

The West Glacier, Mont., cowboy made his advance a reality by finishing third at the Justin Boots Championships in Omaha on Sept. 26, and also adding a check in Kansas City the next day.

“This is great,” Hill, 35, said about returning to the Wrangler NFR for the first time since 2004. “It’s the goal at the beginning of the year to get in the Finals and win a world championship. I was, like, $600 out that last weekend and I knew I had to win, and it felt good to have that pressure and get the job done.”

Thanks to winning $4,456 in Omaha and $355 for tying for sixth place at the American Royal Pro Rodeo in Kansas City, Hill moved from 16th to 13th, ahead of Aaron Pass, Elliot Jacoby and Brett Stall. Stall finished $1,498 behind Jacoby for the final qualifying spot.

There was also a change at the top end of the bull riding standings, required because four-time and reigning World Champion J.W. Harris failed to compete in the minimum number of PRCA rodeos required (40) to be able to count the money earned on the Xtreme Bulls Tour.

Without the $47,726 he earned as Tour champion, Harris dropped from third to sixth in the world standings with $77,307 – $65,858 behind leader Sage Kimzey.

“That’s going to light a fire under me and motivate me more to do good out there (at the WNFR),” Harris said.

While Harris dropped three spots, Hill was just worried about making it into the top 15. His 83-point ride aboard Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Beer Gut is what helped punch his ticket to Las Vegas for the Dec. 4-13 Wrangler NFR.

“I had never been on that bull before,” Hill said. “I saw him in Fort Madison (Iowa) a few weeks before and Howdy Cloud rode him for 85 points, so I knew he was a really good bull. I knew I was just going to have to do my part. It was a great bull. He jumped out there and turned back into my hand and was just really good. I kind of got to spurring on him at the end and it just felt like I made a great ride.”

Although the Justin Boots Championships ended Sept. 26, Hill didn’t realize he placed third behind Tim Bingham (85 points) and Trey Benton III (84) until the next day.

“I was in Kansas City and I didn’t think I was going to end up finishing that high (at Omaha), but that’s just the way it worked out, that I finished third,” Hill said. “It was pretty exciting.”

This is Hill’s third trip to the WNFR, with his other two trips coming in 2002 and 2004 when he finished seventh and fifth, respectively, in the world standings.

“Ten years (since going to the Finals) is a long time, and it feels special to me to make it,” Hill said. “That was a goal of mine at the beginning of the year, and I guess I’m running out of years as far as bull riders go, so it feels good to reach a goal like this.”

Hill wasn’t the only cowboy to qualify for the WNFR with a flurry in the last week, as bareback rider Steven Dent, steer wrestler Seth Brockman, saddle bronc rider Dustin Flundra, and pending an audit, the team roping pair of Tom Richards and Cesar de la Cruz, made it into the WNFR field by each finishing 15th.

Richards and de la Cruz advanced to the coveted Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with huge final weeks.

Richards pocketed $12,120, and de la Cruz earned $10,858.

Pending further review, Richards made his first WNFR with $66,744 – $1,802 more than 16th-place Chad Masters, who won gold buckles in 2007 and 2012. De la Cruz has now qualified for nine WNFRs in a row after edging out No. 16 Kinney Harrell by $2,774.

Dent qualified for his seventh WNFR berth, and fifth in a row, with checks in Omaha, Neb., San Bernardino, Calif., and Stephenville, Texas, to bump injury-plagued R.C. Landingham out of the 15th spot by $3,532.

The highlight for Dent was his win in Stephenville, where his 91-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Dirty Jacket equaled the highest-scored bareback ride of the season; Richmond Champion was also 91 on Dirty Jacket at the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days. Dent started the week 16th.

Brockman, of Wheatland, Wyo., rose from 17th to 14th during the week by tying for second place at the Wrangler Champions Challenge in Omaha, and tying for seventh in the Justin Boots Championships, for total earnings of $5,800.

Ty Erickson dropped to 15th, and the odd man out was Blake Knowles, who fell all the way to 18th in this closest of all the races. Erickson’s total earnings of $52,470 was just $64 better than No. 16 Tom Lewis, and Riley Duvall was $445 back in 17th. This will be Brockman’s second WNFR qualification; he made the field in 2011 and placed in three rounds.

In saddle bronc riding, Dustin Flundra edged Troy Crowser by a mere $148 to claim the No. 15 spot.

Despite having used up his rodeo count (he won two checks during the week), Spencer Wright held on to the 13th spot in the world standings to earn his first WNFR berth and join brothers Cody, Jesse and Jake in the field. It is the first time four brothers have ever qualified for the WNFR.

Tie-down roper Cody Ohl, who was outside the top 50 in mid-July, moved up one more spot to 14th, and will be going to his 20th WNFR.

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Sept.7, 2014—Some cowboys are breathing a little easier and thinking their goal of qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is closer thanks to big wins at the Justin Boots Playoffs at the Washington State Fair.

Forty-eight contestants competed here in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, bull riding and the women’s barrel race on Sept. 5-6 hoping to advance to the Championship Finals on Sunday afternoon. For some of those that advanced winning here was crucial.

“This really took the pressure off for me,” said Kyle Irwin who won the steer wrestling championship. “I still need to win some more money and I’m not going to let up, but I’m in a much better position now than I was before Puyallup.”

Irwin won the first round of competition and came into the finals at the top of the leaderboard with a 3.7-second run. Being the most consistent and fastest steer wrestler here, he stopped the clock in 3.7 seconds again to win the final round and the overall title with a total time of 7.4. His earnings here totaled $8,806 moving him from 15^th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) world standings to 13^th.

With Irwin’s move up in the standings, he is in position to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). A member of the PRCA since 2011, the 6”1’ athlete already has one national title to his credit this year. He set an arena record of 3.3 seconds enroute to the championship at the Ram National Circuit Finals held in Oklahoma last April.

Cody DeMoss is a veteran saddle bronc rider with nine NFR qualifications on his rodeo resume. While he didn’t win the rodeo here, he moved from 15^th to 10^th place in the standings with a third place finish here and at Dayton, Iowa this weekend. Tyrell Smith, from Cascade, Mont., earned the event’s championship with 168.5 points on two rides. He earned $5,514.

The big winner here was the reigning world champion bareback rider Kaycee Feild from Spanish Fork, Utah. Feild won the first round, placed second in the finals and earned the title with a total score of 171 points on two rides. It earned him $10,639 and increased his lead in the world standings. He has a $38,000 lead over the man in second place, Steven Peebles from Redmond, Ore., who had the high score on Sunday at 86.

This year’s rodeo had total prize money of $279,445. It is traditionally the kick-off event of the Washington State Fair which continues through Sept. 21. For more information and complete fair schedules go to www.thefair.com.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – In Kaycee Feild’s decorated rodeo career, he had never won the Ellensburg Rodeo.

That’s not the case anymore.

Feild, who has won the last three bareback riding world championships, totaled 169 points on two head to capture the title Monday at the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena. “This was one of the rodeos, for sure (on my bucket list),” Feild said. “I wrote a whole bunch of goals down in January on my mirror and that was one of my goals, and it means a lot for me to win there.”

Feild secured the coveted title with an 87-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Special Delivery in the short round. “That horse was all there,” Feild said. “Going into it, I knew that horse would have one or two moves and be pretty strong. So my main focus before I got to the rodeo and got down in the chute was to be strong with my core and my feet, and try to just muscle through that first jump, and then let loose and get rolling.

“I had him (Special Delivery) at the NFR in 2012 in the fifth round, and I knew he was going to be quite a handful, but it was a lot of fun.”

Despite his three gold buckles, Feild shows no signs of letting up. In the Sept. 2 Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings, Feild has a substantial lead with $147,553, which is $30,900 more than second-place Steven Peebles. “This win is just what I needed,” said Feild, who was third in the first round in Ellensburg with an 82-point ride. “At the end of August, I just couldn’t get anything going, and I was getting a lot of re-rides. This is what I needed to get my momentum going again.”

Other winners at the $269,914 rodeo were all-around cowboy Trevor Brazile ($4,380 in tie-down roping, team roping and steer roping), steer wrestler K.C. Jones (13.3 seconds on three head), team ropers Charly Crawford and Shay Carroll (18.5 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Chad Ferley (174 points on two head), tie-down roper Hunter Herrin (26.2 seconds on three head), barrel racer Christine Laughlin (51.65 seconds on three runs), steer roper Joe Wells (27.0 seconds on two head) and bull rider Josh Koschel (167 points on two head).

PBR China Series delayed

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Professional Bull Riders announced today that the debut of the PBR in China is being postponed. The much-anticipated series of events originally scheduled to run from August to October 2014 in Qingdao, Nanjing and Shanghai, China, will now be revisited in 2015.

“We always knew that there would be extensive complexities associated with this endeavor,” PBR Chairman and CEO Jim Haworth said. “In order to produce a series this year, we knew it would take virtually a miracle to navigate the many obstacles associated with the approval process and the events’ production. James [Wang] and his team’s hard work nearly delivered that miracle. Unfortunately, however, unforeseen circumstances have made us step back and honestly review our position. While we’re excited to bring the PBR to China, we want to ensure that we enter the Chinese market in a style that accurately represents the PBR and the sport of bull riding to the people of China.”

James Wang, the CEO of Xinniu International Sports Culture Company, which is based in Beijing, approached PBR Australia in 2013 about bringing the sport to China. In early 2014 a partnership was finalized and plans were fast-tracked for a late summer 2014 debut. Present circumstances and scheduling make it necessary to push the debut until at least the summer of 2015.

“When it happens, PBR’s arrival in China will be a historic moment,” Wang said.  “China will have the opportunity to experience the authentic cowboy culture, and observe firsthand the brave and resilient spirit of these hardworking athletes. We appreciate Jim Haworth and the entire PBR staff for their hard work and dedication while preparing for the upcoming tour and are looking forward to continuing our work together.”

More than 30 million households in China have watched highlights of the PBR’s elite Built Ford Tough Series on CCTV.

“While they won’t be the easiest events we’ve ever produced,” Haworth said, “when the series kicks off, it will probably be the most highly-anticipated.”

CALDWELL, Idaho – Steer wrestler K.C. Jones is having a season to remember.

The 43-year-old Decatur, Texas, cowboy is putting himself in the best position of his career to win a coveted gold buckle.

Jones’ hot streak continued at the Aug. 12-16 Caldwell Night Rodeo, as he won the average title with a time of 15.5 seconds on three head.

“This is just awesome,” Jones said after his win. “The fans here were great and it was just a great atmosphere. It was like a standing-room-only crowd.”

Jones, who joined the PRCA in 1995, has proved himself over the years, qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo seven times, including the last two years.

Jones finished a career-best fourth in the world standings in 2006, and he entered last week seventh in the Aug. 11 Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings.

He moved up to sixth in the Aug. 18 standings, yet sits only $15,911 behind standings leader Trevor Knowles, which is less than one round win at the WNFR. In fact, the top 10 steer wrestlers in the world are only separated by $25,377, which should make for a wild competition during those 10 nights in Las Vegas.

Making Jones’ run of success even more remarkable is that he is at least 10 years older than every other man in the top 10 of the bulldogging standings. The average age of the other nine men is just under 30 years old, making Jones the veteran by a wide margin.

“I’m just not putting any pressure on myself,” Jones said. “I’m just glad to be out here competing, and I’m having fun.”

And, winning rodeos.

In addition to the Caldwell Night Rodeo, Jones also has won the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, Rodeo Austin (Texas) and Rodeo de Santa Fe (N.M.) outright, and he was the co-champion at the Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo.

“The biggest difference out here right now is we have the horsepower,” Jones said. “I rode Tebow (Saturday night) and that horse is really coming alive.”

Jones clinched his win in Caldwell with a solid 6.6-second run in the finals, allowing him to leave the arena with $6,822 in winnings – $3,956 for the average victory.

Other winners at the $257,885 rodeo were all-around cowboy Rhen Richard (tie-down roping and team roping, $3,848), bareback rider Luke Creasy (171 points on two head), team ropers Brandon Beers and Jim Ross Cooper (14.5 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Taos Muncy (165 points on two head), tie-down roper Tuf Cooper (25.0 seconds on three head), barrel racer Nancy Hunter (51.48 seconds on three runs) and bull rider Reid Barker (169 points on two head).

For elite 10, a lifetime’s journey ends in ProRodeo Hall of Fame

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – There was a recurring theme in the speeches at the 35^th annual ProRodeo Hall of Fame induction ceremony Aug. 9, connected to heritage, history and the long road traveled to reach the sport’s pantheon. Everybody had a great road story to tell; nobody’s stretched longer or had more air miles than Glen O’Neill’s. From Down Under to Top of the World.

O’Neill, the 2002 saddle bronc riding world champion, became the first cowboy from outside North America to be inducted into the Hall Saturday, the Australian joining fellow world champions Wayne Herman, Byron Walker and the late Pete Grubb, along with champion bullfighter Miles Hare, legendary bucking horse Spring Fling and four elite committees, from the Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo, Snake River Stampede (Nampa, Idaho), Rowell Ranch Rodeo (Hayward, Calif.) and Greeley (Colo.) Stampede.

“When you’re retired,” O’Neil said, “you think back to where you came from. I think back to when I started rodeoing as a country kid in the Outback riding bucking horses. I was lucky enough to have the right attitude to make the right decisions I did in my career. I kept moving forward, and once I got to the top in Australia, I came to Canada and America and wanted to keep climbing. It’s been a hell of a ride.”

Apart from his many honors in the arena – the gold buckle, 11 qualifications for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and career earnings of $1.6 million – O’Neill may have set a record of sorts Saturday, for the longest distance traveled by a family to witness their kin’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

His parents, brother and aunt and uncle were on hand from New South Wales, Australia (8,325 miles away). He also had in-laws from Canada here, as well as his wife, Jennifer, and kids from their home in Didsbury, Alberta.

“This is pretty exciting,” said O’Neill, 41, “and I’m at a loss for words a little bit, because it’s a big deal and there are a lot of people here. To come here and be inducted, see all the history that’s in the Hall of Fame and to now be a part of it, is something special.”

Herman, the 1992 world champion bareback rider and also an 11-time Wrangler NFR qualifier, was no less awestruck by the path that had taken him from the tiny North Dakota community of Golden Valley to his plaque in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

“I told my wife, Connie, when we walked into the (Cowboy Ball Aug. 8) that this was almost surreal,” said Herman, 50. “It was a quite a journey to get here and I’m honored and quite humbled to be standing in (the ProRodeo Hall of Fame) with the names that we were pretending to be to win the world when we were kids riding the bucking machine. To be one of them (a ProRodeo Hall of Famer) is unbelievable and hard for me to imagine.”

For Walker, who won his gold buckle as a steer wrestler in 1981 and whose 16 WNFR qualifications are equal to the second-highest total in the history of his event, this was a day that felt forever in coming.

“I’m thankful to get up and give this speech and not be dead,” said Walker, 56, with a chuckle.

“Waiting all this time (since the April 1 announcement) before going into the Hall of Fame was kind of like waiting to go into the principal’s office. I knew it was happening, and I was anxious to get it over with. Being here has been really nice, and walking around the Hall you realize that this is real.”

Grubb was the second ProRodeo cowboy – following Clay Carr – to win world championships at both ends of the arena. The Salmon, Idaho, native won the bareback riding title in 1938 and the team roping (as a heeler) in 1940. Grubb, who died in 1969 the age of 56, was represented at the induction by his son, Pete Jr.

For 33 years, beginning in 1975, Hare’s full-time job was protecting bull riders in arenas all across North America from 2,000-pound farm animals. He was a bullfighter at the National Finals Rodeo six times (1977, 1985, 1988-91) – making his first appearance when he was just 22 years old – and twice more as an alternate (1984, 1992).

He was the inaugural Wrangler World Champion Bullfighter in 1981 and shared that honor with fellow Hall of Famer and lifelong friend Rob Smets in 1988, developing a style based on careful study and his memory of the bulls’ moves.

“The people who are in the Hall are people who I idolized and are the gods of the game, and it’s just an honor to be in here with them,” said Hare, 58. “It’s no accident that I’m here. I’m a product of my environment. My father (Dean) had bucking bulls and fighting bulls in my backyard when I was born. I just had to step out the door and do it. I didn’t have me a basketball hoop out there. I had rodeo stock. It is all I have ever known. I get along much better with things with four legs than things with two legs.”

Along with Kingsway Skoal and Lonesome Me, Big Bend Rodeo’s legendary mare Spring Fling is the only horse to be honored as both a Bareback and Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year. Spring Fling started out on the bareback side and received the PRCA’s top honor in that category in 1997, then came back to twice claim the saddle bronc award, winning it outright in 1999 and sharing it with Surprise Party Skoal, of Sankey Rodeo, a year later. Spring Fling was also voted the top saddle bronc horse at the 2001 Wrangler NFR and three times was voted the top saddle bronc horse at the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho.

“Whenever Spring Fling was up, I would go out the arena to watch her – no matter what I was doing in the office – and I got goose bumps every time,” said rodeo secretary Crystal Longfellow, who accepted the award on behalf of Big Bend’s Sonny Riley and Don Hutsell. “(Six-time World Champion) Dan Mortensen knew how good Spring Fling was; it was the only horse he ever drew five times and never rode.”

“She really deserves it,” Hutsell said. “She’s the best bronc ever, I think. She just flat bucked, and she had the power to get guys off.”

The PRCA committees selected for enshrinement this year are among the PRCA’s longest-standing and most respected rodeos. Clovis, part of the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, celebrated its 100^th anniversary in April. Nampa will have its centenary rodeo next year, while Hayward just wrapped up its 93^rd year and Greeley its 92^nd.

“It’s a bit overwhelming, and to have this line up with our 100-year anniversary next year is more than we could’ve asked for,” said Snake River Stampede chairman Jeff Agenbroad. “It’s a great way to send us off on our second 100 years.”

ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductees are selected by a committee of former contestants and rodeo experts. More than 150 individuals are nominated each year and selection is based on contributions to the sport of professional rodeo in any one of seven categories: contestant, stock contractor, contract personnel, rodeo committees, livestock, media and notables/lifetime achievement.

Including this year’s inductees, 236 people, 28 animals and 22 rodeo committees have been selected for enshrinement in Colorado Springs since the Hall opened in 1979.

 

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Wade Sundell has ridden a lot of great bucking horses in his seven year saddle bronc riding career.

On Sunday night, the Iowa-born cowboy added another storied bronc to his victory list, dancing across the arena dirt with Frontier Rodeo’s Medicine Woman for 92 points to win the championship round and the overall bronc riding title at the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo.

“I’ve been waiting a long, long time to draw that horse,” Sundell said, noting the random draw that matches cowboy vs. animals. “I knew if I kept my chin down and kept pressure on my rein, it would be awesome. That was the buckingest horse I’ve been on.

“When I nodded my head until I got off, I felt like I was bucked off every jump.”

Despite Medicine Woman’s style, Sundell continued the classic spurring motion that has guided him to five-straight qualifications to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and within millimeters of that elusive world championship. He finished eighth in his first rodeo trip to Las Vegas in 2009, and since has been a fixture among the top six.

He knew doing well in the Dodge City Rode could make a big difference in the final tally; in rodeo, dollars equal points, so every paycheck is vital. This marks the first time in Sundell’s career that he has found success inside Roundup Arena.

“I’ve done horrible in Dodge City,” said Sundell, who finished tied for seventh in the first round with an 81. “I was coming back to the short round tonight way in the back, so I had to let it all hang out and try to make something happen, and it worked.”

He finished with 173 points on two rides and earned $3,603 at the largest rodeo in Kansas.

“This rodeo has helped a lot of people make the finals and win the world,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to do good at this rodeo, and I’ve done bad at it every year. This is awesome to win it now.”

Sundell was joined in the winner’s circle by bull rider J.W. Harris, a four-time world champion; barrel racer Christine Laughlin; steer roper Tyrel Taton; tie-down roper Cody Ohl, a six-time world champ; bareback rider Richie Champion; team ropers Kaleb Driggers and Patrick Smith; and a trio of steer wrestlers: K.C. Jones, Timmy Sparing and Bray Armes.

In fact, Jones’ horse, Tebow, guided both him and Sparing to the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo title.

“He worked awesome,” Jones said of the sorrel gelding. “Tim and I both got a buckle on him, so our plan worked out.”

Jones, who lives in Decatur, Texas, grew up less than three hours west of Dodge City in Las Animas, Colo.

“I remember coming here for the Dodge City Little Britches Rodeo, so we’ve spent a lot of time in this arena,” he said.

That time has paid off.

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Jesse Wright has a little payback on his mind.

A year ago, the Milford, Utah, cowboy posted a 90-point saddle bronc ride during the championship round of the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo. Moments later, his older brother – two-time world champion Cody Wright – scored 91 points to win the round and the coveted Roundup title. Jesse was the runner-up.

On Thursday night at Roundup Arena, Jesse matched moves with Frontier Rodeo’s Griz for 83 points for the highest-marked ride of the performance. He’s two points behind Cody and is a virtual lock to return the Sunday short go-round for just the second time in his career, where he knows there will be an opportunity to not only catch his older brother, but surpass him.

“I’m gunning for him, that’s for dang sure,” said Jesse Wright, who won the 2012 world championship. “It’s awesome when you make the short round, because they hold out the buckers. When you make the short round, you know you’ll get the good ones.”

Griz is one of the good ones, and Wright suspects the athletic bay horse may be back in the mix come Sunday night. Only the top 12 contestants from the preliminary rounds qualify for the championship, and roughstock cowboys – bareback riders, bronc riders and bull riders – will be matched with 12 of the best horses in the game. Griz has bucked at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo several times.

“About three years ago, I won Corpus Christi, Texas, on him,” Wright said. “He’s a really good horse, really nice. He takes a lot of rein and is real flashy.”

After winning the gold buckle two seasons ago, Wright returned to the NFR for the fourth straight year this past December, where he earned a little more than $37,000 and finished well off the pace. This season, he sits 16^th in the world standings and still needs to move up at least one spot in order to qualify for the NFR for a fifth time.

“It’s tough,” he said about repeating as the world champion. “You’ve got to keep a good, positive mindset. Staying healthy is the main key; when you can stay healthy for 365 days and ride at the top of your game and win a world championship, it’s something. You’ve earned it.”

Doing well in Dodge City will be a big boost to returning to the No. 1 spot at the conclusion of the season.

“It’s important here, because I’m not sitting right where I want to be, and this is a big, good rodeo,” he said, referring to the competition and the purse. “This’ll get me set up to go back to the finals and possible win another world championship. I’ll keep coming back here for dang sure.”

Peebles captures coveted California Rodeo Salinas title

SALINAS, Calif. – While growing up in Salinas, Calif., bareback rider Steven Peebles always dreamed of winning the California Rodeo Salinas.

His dream became a reality July 20.

Peebles registered a two-head score of 165 points to win the average at the July 17-20 California Rodeo Salinas.

“This is my hometown rodeo, and one I always wanted to win,” said the 25-year-old Peebles. “It’s pretty awesome to get the victory. I was born and raised and lived in Salinas until I was 14 years old; we moved to Oregon right before I went into high school and I’ve lived in Oregon ever since, but this is still a special win for me.”

Peebles, who lives in Redmond, Ore., tied Clint Laye for the first-round win with an 83-point ride on Rafter G Rodeo’s Black Orchid. He then clinched the average win with his 82-point score aboard Four Star Rodeo’s Black Ice in the finals.

“I was really nervous,” said Peebles, when asked if he thought his two-head score would hold up. “But I was really glad everything worked out the way it did.

“I remember sitting in the grandstands (at California Rodeo Salinas) for most of the first 14 years of my life, and once I bought my PRCA card when I was 18 years old, I’ve been trying to win in Salinas. Now, I’ve finally won it. As far as personal goals, this is one I wanted to win. I wanted to win a gold buckle, and a Salinas buckle.”

Peebles remained in third place in the July 21 Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings, with $80,344. He adds Salinas to his 2014 victory list, which also includes wins at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and the Wrangler Champions Challenge, presented by Justin Boots, in Rapid City, S.D.

“I’ve won some big rodeos this year, but this one (Salinas) definitely sticks out the most,” Peebles said. “All my family from all different states were here watching – and it was just awesome.”

Peebles finished a career-best second in the 2013 world standings with $198,187. He was also second in the average at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas last December, with $116,386 in earnings. He’s qualified for the last five WNFRs.

“I just need to stay consistent and keep having fun and not over-think things,” Peebles said about his plan for the remainder of the season. “I want a gold buckle so bad I can taste it.”

Other winners at the $402,385 rodeo were all-around cowboy Trevor Brazile ($7,659 in tie-down roping and team roping), steer wrestler Dru Melvin (22.3 seconds on three head), team ropers Brazile and Travis Graves (44.4 seconds on five head), saddle bronc rider Jesse Wright (166 points on two head), tie-down roper Hunter Herrin (34.5 seconds on three head), barrel racer Christine Laughlin (64.04 seconds on four runs) and bull rider Elliot Jacoby (178 points on two head).

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – After a week of competition that featured more than 1,500 contestants from all across the United States, Canada and Australia, the 2014 National High School Finals Rodeo National Champions were crowned on Saturday night at the Sweetwater Events Complex.

The top 20 contestants based on their two-head average times and scores advanced to the short round on Saturday night, where they competed in front of a packed house and cameras from RFD-TV’s Cinch Highschool Rodeo Tour. Education Is Key   Rock Springs, Wyo. – Claude Mullins founded high school rodeo because he believed in the value of education. On Friday afternoon, the National High School Rodeo Foundation honored his vision by awarding $152,000 in college scholarships to 249 deserving high school graduates who are competing this week at the National High School Finals Rodeo.   Scholarships ranged from $500 to $5,000, and every senior who applied in 2014 walked away with a scholarship that will help with the ever-rising cost of college tuition. Among the happiest of recipients was Kansas cowgirl Riley Bowen. She was awarded the Claude Mullins Memorial Scholarship – the largest academic based scholarship the NHSR Foundation offers. “I’m really appreciative of this award,” she says, still in awe of collecting the coveted scholarship and the beautiful plaque that goes with it. “I was extremely surprised and shocked.”  Riley plans to put the funds to use at Garden City (Kan.) Community College, where she’ll study biology with a plan to attend medical school and become a plastic surgeon. The Stafford, Kan., cowgirl was inspired by a friend’s tragic situation. “He was in a bull riding accident and shattered the left side of his face,” she recalls. “I saw the reconstruction that was done, and how good of a job they did. It just totally changed his life around, and that inspired me.”  Motivated by what she saw, Riley took several college courses and earned certification that allows her to work at Stafford County Hospital. She draws blood, works in the lab and assists doctors and nurses with routine procedures as she prepares for her future career. She’s spent much of the last two years working in the industry, so biology classes in college should be a piece of cake.  Riley competes in breakaway roping, goat tying and team roping and will be a member of Garden City’s college rodeo team. Just two-and-a-half hours east of her hometown, Garden City offers the only child a chance to learn independence with a safety net of sorts. She predicts that her parents will be popping into town on a regular basis.  “I’m nervous about going off to college,” she admits. “My parents go everywhere with me and help me with everything. I’m going to have to learn how to do a lot of things by myself. But, I’m excited about it, too. I have some family there, and the woman I tie goats with lives there. So I won’t be completely alone.”  A two-time NHSFR qualifier, Riley won the Kansas High School Rodeo Association state championship in goat tying this year. She was 8.93 seconds to place 31^st in the first round in Rock Springs. A 16.18-second run on Thursday night took her out of contention for the short round, however.  “Walking out of the arena, I was 20^th in the average and I was only the eighth one out in the performance,” she says. “I knew then it wasn’t going to happen.”  While she hated to miss the short round, that $5,000 college scholarship put a smile on her face pretty quick on Friday afternoon. The only other $5,000 scholarships offered at the NHSFR are for the all-around cowboy and all-around cowgirl. In addition to the Claude Mullins Memorial Scholarship, several other generous scholarships were awarded on Friday. Britt Driggers of Arkansas won the Lane Frost Memorial Scholarship, while Jonathan Collins of Kentucky nabbed the John Hatley Memorial Scholarship. Funds for each of the $4,000 scholarships come from the Rodeo Cowboys Alumni Association. Utah’s Sil Bundy and Oklahoma’s McKenzie McBeth were the recipients of the Cinch Academic Awards, and each received a $3,000 college scholarship.
