CASPER, Wyo. (June 15, 2016) – Consistency in three preliminary rounds of competition in all nine events at the College National Finals Rodeo is giving student athletes an opportunity to qualify for Saturday night’s championship round.

The second performance of the rodeo saw Missouri Valley College’s Kirbie Crouse take the overall lead in the breakaway roping with a total time of 8.0 seconds. Her 2.5 second run on Wednesday night is currently placing in the third round. Her fastest run was in the first round where she finished in a tie for fourth place. In the second round she was a 3.1.

Crouse is 1.4 seconds ahead of the women in second place, Tess Turk from University of Montana – Western and Sarah Walker from Colorado Mesa College who both have total times of 9.4. There are two performances left before Saturday’s finals, so even though positions could change all three of these women have an opportunity to be among the top 12 who advance.

There have been several contestants that have come close to breaking arena records during this year’s competition and two of them got it done on Wednesday night. Team ropers out of the Southwest Region stopped the clock in 3.9 seconds.

Casey Tew from Weatherford College did the heading for New Mexico Junior College’s Keely Bonnett. They now lead the third round, but two no-times in previous competitions will keep them from advancing to the finals.

The previous record was held by John Kueckelhan and Joseph Harrison from Northeast Texas Community College. They had a time of 4.2 seconds in the Casper Events Center in 2007.

The third round will continue here on Thursday night with the “Wear Pink” performance beginning at 7 p.m.

CASPER, Wyo. (June 14, 2016) – Taylor Santos walked away with his first national championship in the tie-down roping at the 2014 College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR)  as a freshman.

When he earned that title he was competing for Cal Poly State University – San Luis Obispo. He qualified again last year competing for Cal Poly. Then in the fall, he made the journey to Texas moving to Huntsville and joining the ranks of the Sam Houston State University Bearkats.

He had a blazing-fast run in the third round at the first performance of the rodeo on Tuesday night, stopping the clock in 7.5 seconds. That is the fastest time here so far through two preliminary rounds held on Monday and Tuesday.

His success in the third round gave him command of the overall standings. He has a total time of 29.2 seconds on three runs. Ben Walker from the University of Tennessee – Martin is in second with 31.3.

Santos, who is from Creston, Calif., was just one-tenth of a second off of the arena record of 7.4 seconds set at the 2015 CNFR by Blane Cox from Hill (Hillsboro, Texas) College. He now has to wait through three more performances to see if he qualifies for Saturday night’s final round and has a chance to earn another championship here.

Last year’s Rookie of the Year in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in the steer wrestling is also having success here. J.D. Struxness from Appleton, Minn., has been attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University. His coach, Stockton Graves, has plenty of steer wrestling experience which may be rubbing off.

Struxness is leading the third round of competition with a 4.0-second run and the overall standings with a total time of 13.9 seconds on three. If he qualifies for the finals on Saturday night and leaves Casper in that first-place position it would be his first National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association steer wrestling title.

CASPER, Wyo. (June 12, 2016) — The 68^th annual College National Finals Rodeo got underway at the Casper Events Center on Sunday with the Bulls, Broncs and Breakaway performances.

All of the qualifiers in bull riding, breakaway roping, saddle bronc and bareback riding competed in the first of three rounds. Feather River College from Quincy, Calif., took command of the leaderboard earning the top two spots.

Clayton Biglow, a sophomore majoring in ag business got the round win with 80 points. Biglow is making his second appearance at the CNFR. The former high school rodeo champion is working his way up the ranks of rodeo with hopes and plans of competing at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. He leads the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rookie standings and is 12^th in their world standings.

Biglow’s traveling partner and classmate Wyatt Denny finished with a 77.5-point ride to take second. Denny is also making his second appearance here, is a sophomore and is majoring in ag business. Not only are the two schoolmates that travel to rodeos together, they are also each other’s heros.

“Clayton Biglow is my hero.” Denny wrote on his bio sheet. “Even though we are the same height, I look up to him.”

Biglow also listed Denny as his hero, but only because he knows the best places to eat on the road. They will each compete two more times and could the friends could be in a fight for the championship here if they keep it up.

Brandi Hollenbeck from Garden City (Kan.) Community College nearly broke the arena record in breakaway roping on Sunday. She stopped the clock in 1.9 seconds, just one-tenth of a second off the record. She is a second-generation qualifier making her second appearance.

The bull riding winner came from Western Texas College at Snyder. Jacob Spencer scored 78.5 points. Clayton Brum from the College of Southern Idaho (Twin Falls) won the first round of saddle bronc riding with a76.5.

The first round in women’s barrel racing and goat tying as well as team roping, tie-down roping, and steer wrestling will be completed during slack Monday beginning at 7 a.m.

LAS VEGAS – 2015 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Rookie of the Year Kaique Pacheco took over the No. 1 spot in the PBR world standings after being crowned Tailgate Entertainment’s Last Cowboy Standing, part of Las Vegas Helldorado Days, presented by Monster Energy.

Last Cowboy Standing is part of the elite Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) and the third PBR Major of the season, which includes higher points than other regular-season PBR events and an increase in prize money.

 

Pacheco and Eduardo Aparecido were the only two bull riders to advance to fourth round of competition. While Aparecido was bucked off of 2012 PBR World Champion Bull Asteroid (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) in 3.93 seconds, Pacheco sealed his victory with an 88-point effort on Little Red Jacket (J.A.R.S. The reigning Rookie of the Year earned himself 920 points towards the world standings while taking home $115,500, which included a $100,000 payout, presented by Bad Boy Mowers.

 

Two-time reigning PBR World Champion J.B Mauney and Round 1 winner Robson Palermo tied for a second-place finish, both adding 125 points to their world standings totals.

 

Mauney also tied for the high-marked ride of the event with Pacheco, earning 89.75 points atop Moto Moto (J.A.R.S. Bucking Bulls/Gene Owen) to earn a Round 2 win. Gage Gay picked up 110 world standings points, finishing fourth overall, and was eliminated in Round 3 after bucking off Beaver Creek Beau (Chad Berger/Clay Struve/PBR Rock Bar) in 4 seconds.

 

Cooper Davis advanced to Round 3 before bucking off of Cochise (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) in 3.83 seconds, landing a fifth-place finish for 95 points towards the world standings.

 

Aparecido placed sixth, after covering the rarely-ridden Stanley FatMax (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls) to advance him to what would be the final round of competition. FatMax has been covered just five times in 76 BFTS outs. Watch Aparecido become one of five riders to conquer the bovine here.

 

Rounding out the Top 7 was Jorge Valdiviezo who collected 75 world standings points with his 88.5-point ride on Buffalo Jump (Wentz Bucking Bulls) in Round 1.

 

18-year-old rookie sensation Jess Lockwood drew himself a chance to earn himself $50,000 if he covered Bad Boy Mowers Bonus Bull Air Time (Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team) in Round 3. The World Champion Bull Contender made quick work of the young gun, tossing him in 2.66 seconds, so the $50,000 will carry over to the next PBR Major: the Nashville Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires. The Bad Boy Mowers Bonus will be $75,000 in Nashville.

CBS Television Network will broadcast all of the bull riding action from the final round of the Last Cowboy Standing on Sunday, May 15 at 4 p.m. ET.

 

Las Vegas is the 16^th stop on the 2016 Built Ford Tough Series schedule. The BFTS will now enter its annual summer break before the top bull riders in the world return to action August 19-20 for the Nashville Invitational, the final PBR Major of the 2016 season, at Bridgestone Arena.

 

The BFTS is televised every week on CBS, CBS Sports Network – the home of the PBR – and networks around the world. Television ratings for PBR on CBS are up more than 33% this season compared to last year at the same time, according to Nielsen. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR under a multi-year agreement with David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 34-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Tim O’Connell doesn’t have to chase a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association national championship anymore.

The standout bareback rider checked that goal off his list when he won the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo Sunday at the Silver Spurs Arena.

“I’ve never made it out of the semifinals here before, so to come in here to the finals and win it against four great competitors and four great bucking horses is amazing,” said O’Connell, who was making his second trip to the RNCFR. “The good Lord just blessed me.”

O’Connell clinched the national title with an 84-point ride on Korkow Rodeo’s Feather Fluffer in the finals. O’Connell advanced into the finals by placing fourth in the semis with a 77-point ride on Painted Pony Championship Rodeo’s Universal Mamma Don’t No.

“Winning the RNCFR is the next biggest thing you can do in ProRodeo,” said O’Connell, 24. “My ultimate goal this year is to walk out of the 10^th round of the NFR (Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER) with a gold buckle on my belt, but I’m happy to strap this one on that says national champion. Half the guys here at the RNCFR were at the NFR last year and the other half are on their way. The RNCFR is a big-time rodeo.”

For his performance in Kissimmee, O’Connell left town with a $24,915 check. He also was pleased that he was able to get redemption against Feather Fluffer.

“I had been on Feather Fluffer before in Ellensburg (Wash.) last year, but I had a broken left (riding) hand and she kind of owned me,” O’Connell said. “She made me look stupid. I was hoping I would get a chance to get on her again under different circumstances and things worked out great for me today. That horse is so awesome. She gives a guy everything he absolutely needs. She kicks, she blows up and it was just so much fun to get to do what I love and I’m so blessed to be a national champ.”

O’Connell has qualified for the past two NFRs, finishing a career-best fourth last season. He was third in the April 4 WEATHER GUARD^® PRCA World Standings with $43,608.

O’Connell certainly wasn’t alone in celebrating. Team ropers – header Jake Orman and heeler Tyler Domingue – won the most money of any of the RNCFR event winners, collecting $26,601 each. They qualified out of the Texas Circuit to make their RNCFR debut.

Orman and Domingue did rope together last season, but Domingue hasn’t been roping on the PRCA circuit this season.

“We practiced one time before we came down here and this is just awesome,” Orman said. “This is the most money I’ve ever won. It is pretty cool.”

Domingue, who has been best friends with Orman for the last six years, also was basking in the win.

“It’s a great feeling to be a national champ, that’s for sure,” Domingue said. “Jake and I have always roped good together, but we took a break this winter and when we made it here I was excited I got to rope with him. To win here just makes things that much more special.”

Josh Peek, who has had immense success the last couple of years at the RNCFR, won the all-around title for the second year in a row. He left Kissimmee with $30,160 in checks from steer wrestling and tie-down roping. A year ago at the RNCFR at the Silver Spurs Arena, he won $18,171.

“It feels great to repeat as the all-around champion,” Peek said. “I have a great support system and it’s awesome to have this kind of success again.”

The other champions at the Silver Spurs Arena were steer wrestler Josh Boka, saddle bronc rider Rusty Wright, tie-down roper Clint Kindred, barrel racer Ivy Conrado and bull rider Parker Breding.

Texas won the team title with $134,408, just edging out the Prairie Circuit which won $124,447. It was the third win in four years for Texas and the Lone Star State now has a record 13 titles in the event’s 30-year history.

Event winners each received a $20,000 voucher toward the purchase of a new RAM Truck and a Polaris RANGER utility vehicle in addition to their winnings.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – For the last several years, steer wrestler Sterling Lambert has been a standout California Circuit cowboy. Lambert, whose nickname is “Gator,” had his talent on full display on the circuit system’s biggest stage Thursday. The Fallon, Nev., native took the first-round lead with a 4.6-second run at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo at the Silver Spurs Arena. “I was riding (six-time Linderman Award winner) Kyle Whitaker’s horse for the first time (Thursday night) and he’s a really nice horse and I was just really trying to get a good start,” said Lambert, 29. “I just wanted to do my job and bulldog, and it worked out well. Kyle (Whitaker) also did a really good job hazing.” This was Lambert’s third consecutive trip to the RNCFR, and he didn’t have much time to think about his run Thursday, as he was the first cowboy out. “It seems like the last three years I’ve been here at the RNCFR I’ve been one of the first two or three guys to go in the first round,” Lambert said. “But, this is the first time I’ve ever had a good start here, so this is awesome. Hopefully I will be able to keep things rolling.” Lambert did come to Kissimmee with plenty of momentum. He was seventh in the April 4 WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings. Lambert, who joined the PRCA in 2007, had a career-best finish of 37th in the 2013 world standings with $31,511. “I’m really excited to be back here at the RNCFR,” Lambert said. “This is awesome. I have not done real well here in the past, and I would love to win a lot of money this time.” Lambert will not compete again in the RNCFR until Saturday night, but he doesn’t have any big plans from now until then. “I’m going to hang out and help my buddies out (Friday night), and then I will try and do the same thing again on Saturday night,” Lambert said. “I’m not going to back off too much because steer wrestling gets pretty bad if you miss a barrier and you end up late.” While Lambert has RNCFR experience, the same can’t be said for team ropers – header Billy Bob Brown and heeler Garrett Jess – who were making their RNCFR debut. However, the Columbia River Circuit year-end champions didn’t look like RNCFR rookies as they took the first-round lead with a 6.3-second time. “I just went up there and caught him, and Garrett heeled and got a good finish and we made a good run, and this sets us up for the long haul,” said Brown. “That’s what we are here for, to get in the final four. We have a lot of confidence here lately and hopefully we can keep it going.” Brown and Jess are in their second year roping together, and Jess acknowledged they tried to stay calm on this big stage. “We’ve been to a lot of rodeos and roped a lot of steers for a lot of money, and we just tried to stick to our game plan,” Jess said. Brown was quick to credit his 8-year-old horse, Harry, for his success. “He’s a game changer for us,” Brown said. “He’s just an amazing athlete and is really fast. He’s one of a kind and I’m blessed to have that horse.” For good reason. Brown has been riding that horse for three years and it has won him a slew of honors. He was the 2014 PRCA/Resistol All-Around Rookie of the Year and also won National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association team roping championships with heeler Logan Medlin his junior and senior years at Tarleton State University (Stephenville, Texas). He also was the all-around national champion at the CNFR as a junior. In addition to Lambert, and Brown and Jess, other first-round leaders Thursday were bareback riders R.C.  SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 25, 2016) — Amid the back slaps from fellow competitors and his phone buzzing, Tooter Silver, from Quitman, Ark., took a moment to reflect on what had just happened at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo.

The steer wrestler had just stopped the clock in 4.3 seconds to win the second round of semifinals 2 and $4,277. That brought his total earnings from the rodeo up to $12,617 and puts him in first place in the money standings to qualify for Saturday night’s championships.

This was the fifth steer that Silver had run in the AT&T Center and the fifth time he earned money. It was however the first time that he got to make the victory lap around the arena for winning the round. He had second-place finishes in the other four rounds.

His success here has come aboard the 2015 AQHA steer wrestling horse of the year owned by Ty Erickson, from Helena, Mont., that they call Shake Em. Either Erickson or Clayton Hass from Terrell, Texas, were riding horseback on the other side keeping the steer running straight. All three of these men are advancing and will have the opportunity to compete for the championship here.

“I remember coming here 15 years ago and seeing the buckle they give here,” Silver said. “I’ve really wanted to win that buckle. It would mean everything. This is one of the greatest rodeos that ever was.”

This is only the fourth rodeo that Silver has entered for the 2016 season. When he is not on the road, he works in a family construction business with his father-in-law and brother-in-law. His wife, Laura Kennedy, competed in the barrel racing in bracket 4 but did not win enough money to advance to the semifinals.

“My wife and I travel together 90% of the time,” he added. “She really wants to make the NFR (Wrangler National Finals Rodeo). We’ll see what happens. Our family is very supportive and we couldn’t do it without them.”

Barrel racer Morgan Breaux knows all about family support. In 2009, she was in this arena showing a steer that was selected as the grand champion of the San Antonio Stock Show. On Friday night, they again brought steers into the AT&T center to select this year’s champions. One hour later, Breaux from Tomball, Texas, took her horse around three barrels in 14.06 seconds to win the round. She will advance to the finals and will have an opportunity to add a rodeo championship to go with her stock show championship.

The top five in each of the events based on money earned will compete Saturday night for the lion’s share of $1.65 million in cash and prizes. Action in the AT&T Center on Saturday starts at 1 p.m. with a $100,000 Xtreme Bulls competition. The championship finals of the rodeo begin at 7:30.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 24, 2016 — Steer wrestler Jason Thomas has already won more money at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo than he has in the 2016 rodeo season.

Thomas, from Benton, Ark., is currently 7^th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. The regular season started last October and he has season earnings of $11,587 so far. That was until he competed at the San Antonio Rodeo.

Thomas competed in the fourth bracket here and it didn’t start off so well for the former National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion. He didn’t give the steer the required head start and added a 10-second penalty to his already long time of 17.3 seconds. He came back in round two and won it with a 4.8. Then he won round three with a 4.1. That put him second place in the money standings with a total of $4,562 in his bracket and advanced him to the semifinals.

Semifinals 1 saw him placing second in the first round and winning the second with a 4.3-second run. Thomas earned checks of $3,208 and $4,277 respectively. Thomas has won $12,047 here so far and now has a chance to compete for an additional $14,447 in the finals.

Thomas could be headed for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo thanks in part to the money he has won here. There is only one contestant that has won more money than the steer wrestler. Bull rider Sage Kimzey made his second consecutive victory lap around the AT&T Center on Wednesday night after scoring 86 points on D&H Cattle Company’s Hi Razor.

Kimzey, the reigning world champion, has won $12,261 and has the opportunity to add to that substantially. Not only will he compete in Saturday night’s championship finals, he will also compete Saturday afternoon in the Xtreme Bulls, the richest event on the tour.

Semifinals 2 starts on Thursday night at 7 p.m., with 10 more contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, women’s barrel racing and bull riding hoping to earn enough money to advance to the finals.
