CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 18, 2018) – Fans would be hard pressed to find any better action than they saw at the Caldwell Night Rodeo during Championship Night on Saturday. Just ask anyone of the 8,000 that were in attendance.

In anticipation of the championships, Saturday night’s tickets were all sold in advance and were gone early the afternoon of the final performance. The rivalry between the Rowdys in the east stands and the Civies in the west stands was going strong all night and rodeo contestants fed off the energy of the fans.

One of those contestants, bareback rider Connor Hamilton, made the trip here from Calgary, Alberta, and while he has competed at big rodeos in his home country, nothing was quite like Caldwell for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rookie. Hamilton rode at the first performance last Tuesday. His 85.5-point ride on Outlaw Bucker’s Awkward Todd was the high-marked ride of the night and as such got Hamilton a trip around the arena on a saddle horse for a victory lap.

Then he won the rodeo after riding Powder River Rodeo’s award-winning horse Craig at Midnight for 88 points. He had just watched world champion Kaycee Field score 88 on another horse from the Wyoming stock contractors, Bobcat. He was also up against the reigning world champion Tim O’Connell who finished third with an 85.5.

When it was all said and done, Hamilton won the championship with the highest total score on two rides at 173.5 points. Hamilton is currently third in the bareback riding rookie of the year standings with $11,892 in season earnings. He added to that significantly with the $7,405 that he won here.

The saddle bronc riding record was nearly in jeopardy Saturday night. Shaun Stroh set the arena record here in 2010 with 91 points. Two men came close to matching it and again it was horses from Powder River Rodeo that got these cowboys 90-point rides.

Hardy Braden from Welch, Okla., was first to go. He rode Miss Chestnut and took the overall lead. He had to wait thru several more competitors to see if it would hold. One of those competitors was the reigning world champion Ryder Wright from Milford, Utah.

Wright got on Double Take and with another outstanding effort got a 90. They had also tied in the first round and ended up splitting the win here with 176 points. That earned each of them $5,576.

The big winner here was steer wrestler Tyler Waguespack from Gonzales, La., who downed three steers in 12.8 seconds. He won $8,447. Trevor Brazile won his fourth tie-down roping title here and added $5,544 to his earnings. Brazile who holds the arena record at 7.3 seconds had a total time of 27.3 on three runs for the championship.

Barrel racer Stevi Hillman was the only repeat winner from 2017. Hillman rode MCM ImASharpGuy to the title last year. This year she was on Cuatro Fame a horse that she calls “Truck” for the win. They had three runs that added up to 51.32 seconds earning $7628.

           CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 28, 2018 — Once again, the best was saved for last in the barrel racing at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

Sunshine did more than brighten up the skies at Frontier Park; it also dried the ground While arena conditions weren’t ideal, they had improved from Friday and it showed in Saturday’s barrel racing times.

The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association field included many that had been the most successful in the first round, including reigning world champion Nellie Miller from Cottonwood, California. Riding her great horse, Rafter W Minnie Reba, that she calls “Sister,” Miller stopped the clock in 17.76 seconds. She was the final barrel racer in the regular competition before Championship Sunday.

Combined with her first-round time of 17.54, she leads the overall standings with a total of 35.30 seconds. Miller had a big smile on her face and was giving Sister some love as she rode out of the arena.

They won the first round and tied for fifth in the second round. She has already won nearly $10,000 here and stands to add to it significantly on Sunday. Miller is currently second in the world standings. A big win here could help her narrow the gap.

Bill Tutor made a big move in Saturday’s bareback riding. Wyoming’s own Seth Hardwick was at the top of the leaderboard at 166.5 points on two rides. Tutor changed that with an 85-point effort on J Bar J Rodeo’s Smack Daddy Saturday. That gave him a total of 167.5 to move him into first place.

Steer wrestler Levi Rudd, from Chelsea, Oklahoma is the big money winner of more than 1,200 contestants that have competed at the 122^nd edition of the rodeo. Rudd placed second in the first round after stopping the clock in 6.1 seconds on Friday. He came back on Saturday with another second-place finish at 8.0. Those two checks added up to $11,006 in earnings and he has an opportunity to add a lot more to that on Championship Sunday.

Rudd now has command of the overall lead and is on pace to have the biggest win of his career. He has a total time of 14.1 seconds and is over two seconds faster than the man in second place, Curtis Cassidy from Donalda, Alberta.

Friday and Saturday also saw the most successful group of bull riders. Trevor Kastner, from Roff, Oklahoma; Gray Essary III, of Sommerville, Tennessee; Edgar, Montana’s Parker Breding; and Ruger Piva, from Challis, Idaho all rode two bulls. That increased the total to seven riders that had a score on both of their bulls. The remainder of the 16-man field is made up of the highest scoring riders on one ride.

All the other events will feature the top 12 riders with the highest total score or fastest total time from two competitions. Action for Championship Sunday gets underway at 12:45 p.m. Along with the prestigious buckle, champions will also receive trophy saddles and other awards.

            CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 25, 2018 — It’s only fitting that two local participants in the rodeo had success on Cheyenne/Laramie County Day on Wednesday at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

A very enthusiastic crowd cheered for one of the favorites, Brody Cress, in the saddle bronc riding. The Hillsdale resident won the competition here last year. He graduated from Cheyenne Central High School where he was a wrestling stand out.

Cress got on a horse owned by Stace Smith Pro Rodeo named Utopia and when the judges added up their scores, he had an 88 by his name. That is the highest score at the 122^nd edition of the rodeo so far. He then packed up his gear and was making a mad dash out of Frontier Park. He was headed to Eagle, Colorado to ride Wednesday night, then back to Cheyenne for his second round of competition on Thursday.

In the steer wrestling, it was Aaron Vosler, that had the stars align in his favor. Vosler stopped the clock in 5.7 seconds which is the fastest run of the rodeo so far. The steer wrestling is one of the most exciting events at Cheyenne. Steers get a 30-foot head start and when cowboys get to them, they are all running full on.

Anything can happen and often does. Getting that steer slowed down, and then laying it on the ground takes skill, strength and patience. A 5.7-second run wouldn’t place at most rodeos, but it is just six-tenths off of the arena record in Frontier Park.

Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi is hoping for her second buckle from Cheyenne. She won the rodeo here in 2007 aboard her great gelding Stitch, then went on to win her first of two world titles. This year Pozzi-Tonozzi is riding an American Quarter Horse mare, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that she calls Mona.

They had a nearly flawless run in the big arena here stopping the clock in 17.61 seconds. She won almost $2,000 here in the first round with a time of 17.83. She now has command of the overall standings here with a total time of 35.44 seconds. Lacinda Rose from Willard, Missouri, is in second at 36.77.

All of the competition at the sixth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo will be in the second round. Competition gets underway at 12:45 p.m. There will be a lot of pink seen around the arena as well as inside of it as “Give Cancer the Boot” is the day’s theme.

Cashen Turner made it back to the short go in three events, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and pole bending and is the 2018 IFYR All Around Champion. She started competing when she was five, added pole bending and picked up roping and it all fell into place. She took reserve All Around for Kansas High School this year, reserve champion in barrel racing and pole bending. When she’s not rodeoing or practicing, Cashen is busy working on her clothing line, CT Designs. “For my fifth birthday, I wanted a sewing machine; in 6^th grade I wanted a manikin. I put the clothes I’m going to wear on my manikin every day to see how they look,” said the 16-year-old home schooler. “After I started sewing, then came the colored jeans and the blinged-out shirts – all through junior high – every time I walked out of the trailer, dad just shook his head.” Her family recently moved to Edmond, Oklahoma. “I love Edmond – there’s a Starbucks two miles away and in Plains, Kansas, it was an hour away.” She admits having a tough fall. “I came back in the spring; I got a new barrel horse, that’s changed my confidence. I wasn’t clicking with my horse, so we decided I only have so many more years left. Found him through Oxygen, Shot of Fire Water, he’s ran everywhere. Four years ago today he was in Calgary running at the short go. He’s 15, but he doesn’t act like it. He has the heart and the grit.” She’s hoping to go to OSU and study graphic and fashion design. She didn’t get her fashion drive from anyone in her family. “My mom is so tom boy, and certainly not from dad, who focuses on his trailer business, RangeMaster Trailers. My brother plays golf and just went to college to study sports management.”

ESTES PARK, Colo. – Sometimes it pays to know the competition. That’s why championship teams scout their opponents, and it’s why rodeo cowboys pay attention to the animals they’ve drawn.

Will Lummus knew the steer on which he competed Friday night at Rooftop Rodeo was good. Sam Williams won the first round with a 3.6-second run, and another cowboy was fast that same steer on Thursday night.

But nobody’s been faster this week in Estes Park than Lummus, who grappled the animal to the ground in 3.2 seconds to take the second-round and aggregate leads at Rooftop Rodeo. He even tied an arena record, matching the same time set by John Lowry in 1976 and Chad Hagan in 2002.

“That was the fastest steer I’ve ever thrown,” said Lummus of West Point, Miss. “I was 3.3 in Jackson, Miss., last year, so this was cool. Last year here, I was 4.5 on both steers and didn’t win anything. I like Estes Park. It’s an awesome place to be. They have always had good steers, and just the environment …

“I’m from Mississippi, and we don’t have mountains. Everywhere you go around here, the scenery is beautiful. There’s great cattle, a great committee; this is a great place to have a rodeo with great fans. It’s a wonderful place to be.”

He also got some big-time assistance from his traveling partner, K.C. Jones, a nine-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier from Decatur, Texas. Jones served as the hazer, while Lummus rode Jones’ horse, Tebow.

“That horse is 21 years old and doesn’t look like it,” Lummus said. “That’s actually the first steer I’ve run on him this y ear. We felt like this setup fit Tebow better, and it worked out great.

“Great horse, great hazer and a great hazing horse, Ava. It all came together well.

It also came together for bareback rider Jake Brown, a three-time NFR qualifier from Cleveland, Texas. The reigning Rooftop Rodeo champion, has earned more than $67,500 so far this season and sits fourth in the world standings. He’s ever so close to clinching his fourth straight trip to Las Vegas in December, home of ProRodeo’s grand finale.

“This rodeo’s huge,” Brown said after his 85-point ride on Cervi Rodeo’s Fire’s Easy, which moved him into the lead. “I got the win last year, and I was blessed. I won over $6,000. That’s a big chuck over what it takes to get to the NFR. If I get the win here this year, I think I’d be pretty comfortable and think I’d almost made the NFR before the end of July.”

Only the top 15 advance to the season grand championship, the sport’s richest rodeo. It’s a big deal to be playing for the biggest money when December arrives. Having success in Estes Park has been a big part of why he’s played on rodeo’s biggest stages.

“It’s just awesome here,” he said of Estes Park, surrounded by the Rocky Mountains in every direction. “It’s great added money, great horses and beautiful weather. The hospitality is awesome.

“This has been a good rodeo to me, and that’s why I keep coming back here from year to year.”

Young steer wrestler sets new record at St. Paul Rodeo; world champ moves into the average lead

St. Paul, Ore. (July 5, 2018) – A reigning world champion has taken the lead in the steer wrestling after three performances of the St. Paul Rodeo.

Tyler Pearson, Louisville, Miss., had a time of 4.0 seconds in the steer wrestling to be the fastest time in the second round on July 4.

The 33-year old man capitalized on his opportunity during the July 4 matinee. “I knew I had a good steer, I just had to score sharp.” His new horse was also cause for the win. “I had Bobby, my horse, up here, and he gave me a good chance. It felt good.”

Bobby, Pearson’s twelve-year-old bay gelding, is a second horse to his famous mount, Scooter. Scooter, whose registered name is Canted Plan, is the 2017 American Quarter Horse Association Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year and is owned by Pearson and fellow steer wrestler Kyle Irwin. Pearson bought Bobby earlier this year, to give Scooter a break, and Bobby has stepped into his new job well. “He’s sure fit the role real good,” he said. “We’ve won a lot of money on him, and I think he’s going to be real good.”

Bobby also carried Rowdy Parrott to a new record in the steer wrestling on Wednesday night in St. Paul.

Aboard Bobby, the 24-year-old cowboy turfed his steer in 3.4 seconds, breaking the old record of 3.5 seconds set by three different cowboys: Mike Fuller in 1986, Luke Branquinho in 2002, and Shawn Greenfield in 2016.

In the steer wrestling, cowboys often share horses. Bobby is ridden by not only Pearson and Parrott, but by Pearson’s traveling partners Irwin, Ty Erickson, 2016 World Champion Tyler Waguespack, and Cole Edge. The five men are traveling together over the July Fourth holiday, and St. Paul is their last rodeo after a busy Cowboy Christmas season. Pearson is grateful their schedule will slow down for a bit. “We’re glad. It’s been a lot of driving all night.” They have two days off before they start back up. “We go to (the) Calgary (Stampede) now, and we’ll go up there and relax, get to bulldog, and chill out.”

The Calgary Stampede starts on July 6, and the men plan on being in Calgary by noon on July 5. “We’ll be there by lunch, let our horses rest, and we can rest a little bit.”

Pearson won second place at the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede on July 3, which was about the only place he’s won money over Cowboy Christmas. “It’s been a little slow,” he said, of his winnings. “I won second at Greeley last night, and that was good to save the Fourth.”

After winning his first world title last year, Pearson has been able to relax. Winning a gold buckle “takes the pressure off me, because (being a world champion) is your ultimate goal, and when you have that done, you can just go relax and steer wrestle.”

MANDAN, N.D. (July 2, 2018) –The opening performance of the 139^th Mandan Rodeo Days Celebration saved the best for last, but not before lightning from cleared the crowd and then dumped a deluge of water as the final barrel racer left the arena.

After a half-hour delay, the bull riders in the second section gave the die-hard 30 or so fans who returned to watch a major league show.

Koby Radley of Montpelier, La., scored 91.5 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Soup In A Group, a bull that was only ridden once last season. Radley is having his best season in pro rodeo. He’s currently ranked 11^th in the world championship standings and making a strong bid to qualify for his first National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

Radley, a Cajun cowboy has qualified for the Texas Circuit Finals several times, was the best of three outstanding rides after the storm cleared.

Trey Kimzey of Strong City, Okla., younger brother of four-time world champion Sage Kimzey, scored 89.5 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Living Large and NFR veteran Parker Breding, who is ranked second in the world standings, tallied 89 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Stretch.

The first sprinkles of rain started during the barrel racing, but the downpour held off until south Texas cowgirl Sissy Winn finished her run. Winn, the final cowgirl to race, clocked a time of 15.57 seconds, just before the flood began.

Contestants in the other events faced dry, even dusty conditions and turned in some scores and times that could remain at the top of the leaderboard when the rodeo ends Wednesday night.

Bear Pascoe and Steve Simons win the Reno Million during Wrangler BFI Week.

RENO, Nev. (June 19, 2018) – A retired NFL tight end and a cattle contractor – both recreational team ropers – raked in $95,220 with their ropes on Tuesday at the 22^nd edition of the #11 Reno (Nevada) Million.

Californians Bear Pascoe of Morro Bay and Steve Simons of Sanger roped four steers in 34.21 seconds to win the event and $47,610 total per man. They needed only a 10-second run to clinch the win, but finished in 8.8 seconds.

“I was just trying to not break out and go get him caught,” said Pascoe. “I knew Steve would rope him on the first or second jump.”

His partner did just that, motivating himself by thinking of a couple of things his wife could use with the money. Simons, formerly in the construction business, provides steers for ropings across California. He and Bear’s dad Sean Pascoe had roped for years together and he and Bear, originally from Porterville, are close friends.

“I haven’t been to this roping since I was 16 years old,” Pascoe said. “Corky (Ullman) and Daren (Peterson) have done a great job. The cattle were outstanding.”

The Reno Million was founded in 1996 by local real estate developer Perry Di Loreto and is now owned by Ullman-Peterson Events. It was designed to give equally matched amateur ropers across the country a chance at six-figure payouts, using a handicapping system similar to golf.

Traditionally, the roping was top-loaded and promoted first-place payouts of $100,000. This year, organizers used a format closer to official payoff formats at World Series of Team Roping events. , distributing the same money without a large gap between first and the other places.

This year’s Reno Million drew 120 teams, each of whom paid a $5,500 entry fee and were screened to ensure their roper classification numbers didn’t exceed 11.5.

It’s been a good week for 32-year-old Pascoe – the #6 header was also placing Tuesday in a tie for fifth in steer wrestling at the adjoining $600,000 Reno Rodeo after wrestling two steers in 9.6 seconds. He expects to make Saturday night’s short round, along with his wife, Katie, who was winning the barrel racing.

“Throwing the hell out of a steer in steer wrestling is like scoring a touchdown,” Pascoe said. “But getting a good start and spinning one and your man sets him down? That’s pretty good, too.”

Pascoe, who spent five seasons playing for the New York Giants, caught four passes in their 21-17 victory over the Patriots in the 2011 Super Bowl. But he continued to rope during every off-season. Today, he and Katie ranch on land owned by her father, Hall-of-Fame steer wrestler John W. Jones Jr. Meanwhile, the 6’5” Bear is also becoming a certified CrossFit trainer.

Pascoe said continuing to work out helps him mentally as much as physically. He gives credit to his dad for imparting lots of good advice on the mental game over the years.

“Besides being a good horseman and a good cowboy, he’s hard to rattle,” Bear said of his father, Sean, who was also competing in the Reno Million.

In fact, Simons, a 5-Elite heeler, likens the entire Pascoe clan (Bear has twin siblings) to Louis Lamour’s fictional Sacketts. The baby of the family, Bear has no plans to stop roping or wrestling steers.

“I entered the team roping at a handful of PRCA rodeos and didn’t have much luck,” Pascoe said. “They were a bit much for this green horse. But I’d like to revisit that. I’d love to be a multiple-event guy. One of my goals is to be invited to the Timed Event Championships of the World.”

Custom-made bronze trophies crafted by Montana Silversmiths were awarded for the best head horse and heel horse at the Reno Million, chosen by a committee watching throughout the day. Texan John Coltharp’s mount won the Heel Horse award, while Lucy Bishop’s earned the bronze awarded to the Head Horse of the Reno Million.

LAS VEGAS – As Sunday afternoon came to a close and the dust settled at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, the WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance) crowned its first event champions at its inaugural $400,000 rodeo in Las Vegas.

Top bull riders, steer wrestlers, team ropers, saddle and bareback bronc riders, barrel racers and tie-down ropers converged for the all-new WCRA Rodeo Showdown. Following tight competition among the world’s best western athletes during Saturday’s opening round, the top four in each discipline hit the dirt to battle their way to the final round where the top two faced off. In an unprecedented format, the athletes picked either their animal or their position in the final round draft.

Claudio Montanha Junior and Jose Vitor Leme (2017 PBR Rookie of the Year) were the last men standing in the final round of the bull riding. In the end, a monster 90-point score aboard Bottoms Up (TNT Bucking Bulls/Hart Cattle Co) earlier in Round 2 sent Leme into the winner’s circle as the inaugural WCRA bull riding champion.

 

Leme had made his PBR debut in Las Vegas last November, going a perfect 6 for 6 at the PBR World Finals to win the event and rookie of the year honors. “The first time I set my feet in the U.S., it was here (in Las Vegas),” said the Brazilian cowboy, who played semi-pro soccer and is coming back from a torn ACL. “Every time I come here I feel like a new man.”

STEER WRESTLING:

Alabama cowboy Kyle Irwin brought the crowd to its feet on Sunday as he recorded a 5.49-second score after throwing his steer and proving that hustle matters. Irwin went up against Idaho’s own Olin Hannum in the final round, but walked away the champion.

TEAM ROPING:

Clay Smith and Paul Eaves were not messing around during their run as Sunday’s event came down to the wire. After a consistent weekend Smith, a new dad, was excited to walk to the winner’s circle for his belt buckle and check presentation with his partner Eaves. The brotherly duo of the night Riley and Brady Minor were consistent and fast, but fell short of the win in the final round.

SADDLE BRONC:

Nebraskan cowboy Cort Scheer was the only man to ride in the final round on Sunday with an impressive score of 89.5, including his patented classic dismount. Wyoming’s Brody Cress, who took the Round 1 win on Saturday was bucked off leaving Scheer to stand in the winner’s circle.

BARREL RACING:

Hailey Kinsel, seemingly can’t be stopped. The 23-year old just keeps knocking down big wins including the San Antonio Stockshow and Rodeo this year prior to today’s inaugural WCRA. Kinsel and her horse, Sister, have an impressive history in Las Vegas including four round wins during the WNFR at the Thomas & Mack in 2017, topping off a season during which she won at prestigious rodeos Days of ’47 and The American.

Marty Yates is a gambling man; instead of playing it safe to beat his opponent Tuf Cooper’s score, he put one wrap on the calf and called it a day.
